Dromedary peak was developed by Marty Karabin and offers both sport and crack climbs in three main areas: East Face, Ivory Tower and Gray Wall. The rock is volcanic and although it is classified as rhyolite, it is not of the same quality as that found in the Superstitions or Queen Creek. It has a smoother finish, which is more merciful on the hands.
Getting There
From Phoenix head east on Hwy 60 toward Globe for approximately 45 minutes. Just five miles east of Florence Junction and on the right side of Hwy 60 at mile marker 217, you will see a dirt road that leads to the east side of a double humped mountain. The approaches to the three climbing areas are along this dirt road. 2WD is required to reach the approach to the East Face and Gray Wall. 4 WD is required to reach the approach to Ivory Tower. There is primitive camping all along the dirt road.
Please note: at present there is no established trail to the Ivory Tower area (the original trail from the early to mid 1990’s is not apparent). I, along with some friends, have started placing strategic cairns that initiate from the small hill where limited parking is available (for 4-WD vehicles). All visitors to this area may wish to help establish a viable trail to reduce human impact to the desert for the approach to Ivory Tower.
