| Well the leaves are falling and wind is picking up. Im jonesing for some ice, and am having a completely unjustifiable urge to play (aka buy) with the new Petzl Quarks... So who in here has climbed on them? Same swing as the older quarks? Leash compatible still? General thoughts? Thanks, Mike | FLAG |

| I have upgraded my ice tool collection this year with the New Nomics, Quarks and Ergos here is my take on the New Quark . I have the new as well as the old style Quarks Ive only had a brief chance to swing the new quarks heres my take on them. The bend in the shaft is almost the same as the old style quarks the first thing you will notice is the head weight or lack there of in the new tools I personaly like a heavy headed tool and while you can add headweights to the new quark i feel this light headed tool swings more like an Aztar than an original quark .. This is the one thing I do not like about this tool I realy wanted it to be an original Quark with a serviceable spike and a trigrest.IT also seems to me the grip is slightly thinner and I like the nice fat grip on my old quarks way better. again this is just my personel pref.It does come witha hammer if you want to call it that personally I think it looks more like a nut than a hammer and I believe this is what youll use it for when drytooling. The next feature I like is the spike FINALLY has a hole big enough for a std carabiner ( leave it to the frogs to take forever to get a clue) and also the addition of a trigrest that can be positioned along the shaft anywhere without tools makes for a nice touch I just hope it lasts as it seems flimsy. It is leash compatible but that costs extra 50 bucks ea as well as the head weights cost 60 bucks a pair. .. Here is a condensed oppinion of mine Not the same swing not quite the same tool has features that make it more usefull for alpine climbing handles vert ice ok prolly will be serviceable for some mixed shenanagans if you like that sort of thing looks kinda like a quark but preforms more like an aztar on steroids Im no expert I know what I like and that is all I suggest you get up close and personal with one and decide for yourself OH YES one more note Petzl strikes again !!!! PICKS PICKS PICKS If you own the old style QUARK< NOMIC ect the new picks are not interchangable I spoke directly w Petzl and they confermed my worst nightmare While they said they would continue to support the old tools (Ive heard thoes ducks fart in shallow water before) for ten years I don't believe it for one second there doing the same crap they pulled with the Quasars,Axars and Pulsars original picks dry up and nothing left but crappy replacements tha SUCK ASS! IM not a huge BD fan but atleast they got one thing right in my book there picks are inter changeable and have been that way for years. Just my .o2 | FLAG |

Just my .o2 This effin blows, I was thinking of getting either new or old Nomics, but this radically changes the whole situation. A climbing gear company adopting a "razor blade" biz model is plain wrong. | FLAG |

| According to Petzl website, the new Ice Pick is compatible with the older model (Petzl U21). Same goes for the dry pick. The new tools are going to use a standardize set of picks. Stock up for Quark picks if you can! | FLAG |

| I'm here to warn everyone the new picks are NOT interchangeable with the old nomics! We tried them out on my friends tools and while they kinda fit it's not quite right I believe it has to do with the fact that the new Nomics have a slot for the hammer anyway just a heads up to all cheers ice | FLAG |

I spoke with the people at Petzl directly as well and they told me the new picks are compatible with the old nomics (their website states this as well), though not the old quarks. I then asked the guys in the shop if they were compatible and the they said yes they were and that the had tried them on old nomics themselves. I admittedly haven't yet had the chance to perform the swap myself since my new quarks haven't arrived yet. Iceman, when you say they don't quite fit what precisely do you mean? One of the reason's why I bought a pair of the new quarks was that it was cheaper to do so and sell a set of my old alpine tools then to upgrade my old nomics with new picks and hammer/adze (plus I would get a set of new tools in the bargain). If the new picks aren't compatible with my old nomics that really changes the calculus for me, particularly since I still will be using my nomics as my primary ice tools. | FLAG |

| I too am trying to figure this out, it appears that on petzl's website they have the ice and dry tool pick as being compatible in the Nomic U21 and U21 2....Am I understanding that correctly to mean both the new model(U21 2) and the first model (U21)?? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Seth | FLAG |

| If you look at the back of the new nomics it's milled out for the hammer well your old nomics are not..... Right?????? So you have this gap that does not make me warm n fuzzy and for the record I stand corrected petzl does say they are interchangeable you can't prove it by meunless there is some kind of spacer they make for use with the old tools or there expecting you to purchase hammers so you can use them on the old tools. Don't get me wrong I love petzl gear for me there tools are the best I've ever climbed with! Again try it for yourself and if it makes you warm n fuzzy cool I'm stoked for ya but for me it's just not quite right. Like I said I'm no expert and never claimed to be I know what I like and that's all I like things to work the way I expect and if they do not than I try something else For the record I still think it's lame they cannot make all there picks interchangeable new or old!!!! And geeze give me a break I sold a ton of gear to purchase the new tools I've been climbing for 20+ years and have all kinds of goodies to sell n pay for new gear. The new quarks got a good workout and they still for me swing like an aztar and nothing like my old quarks. Cheers ice | FLAG |
