A great Bouldering spot/ one of the best in perhap's the world!! Fall and winter are the best times to visit hp40, and has three bouldering competition's a year/- Chandler Mountain Challenge, Sloperfest/Slap-N-Jam, Triple Crown Bouldering series!! The rock is sand rock and is some of the best sloper's in bouldering!!
Getting There
From Chattanooga Tn. go Interstate 24 west to interstate 59 South and follow to hwy 231 and follow sign's to Horse Pen's 40. From Atlanta Ga. take interstate 20 to interstate 59 towards Attalla/Gadsden and get off at hwy 231 north and follow sign's to hp40!
What is all this safety rating on the boulder problems for?
I have climbed many of the problems listed and felt that none were dangerous.
I just feel that it is misleading to add a "PG13, R, or X" rating to a boulder problem...it's bouldering, if you don't have a good spotter you can hurt yourself on anything.
The guy who contributed these problems is new to MP.com so he might have over done it, no big deal. He can, and I agree that he should, go back and edit his post to get rid of the safety rating and the "stars" he added to the name for the sake of making the site more uniform and consistent, plus they are not needed. So thanks, bradkillough, for your contribution, but please consider editing your posts.
While the PG13, R, X ratings may seem odd for bouldering, but there are definitely problems out there that are more dangerous than others, perhaps all problems are really PG13, but in my experience there are definitely more dangerous problems. For example, when you get over 20' or so, even with great spotters there is a good chance of getting hurt, now add a talus field below that, then what do you have. Safety ratings are just a way of letting people know what they are getting into just like grades. I do realize that most things at HP40 are on the relatively safe side with a few notable exceptions (the left side of Mortal Combat comes to mind) so maybe not as much of an issue here but what about the Buttermilk's where problems regularly go over 20' or Hueco or RMNP where you could have a terrible landing.
