I am a travel nurse who may be coming to Bend for a 13 week contract starting in mid August. My girlfriend and I live in a van (more I guess on the yuppie side of the yuppie/hippie spectrum, in that it is nice and new and shiny.)
Any thoughts on the feasibility of this in Bend? It's not an RV, we don't want to stay in an RV park (I guess there might be exceptions, but if we're going to pay the price of rent for an RV site, we might as well rent a room). I've lived in vehicles in other places and know the feasibility varies enormously.
Super feasible. There's FS land all around town and lots of people live in their vans while visiting. Your life will be better if you have bikes for short distance travel, but if you have been living in your van long term already, you've probably figured that one out already. FYI summer is probably the worst time to visit Bend for climbing.
Van living is probably your best option for a short term stay in Bend. Rentals here are supper spendy and hard to come by. The town is surrounded by forest service and BLM land though so there are a lot of places to tuck away for free. There are also a number of developed campgrounds in the area. Most would be a bit far out for a daily commute, but good for days off.
