1989...JB on Three Piece Route (5.12-) at Windy Po...

Description

According to Squeezing the Lemmon II, "this short section of the highway is from milepost 13.6 to 13.8 (edited) and has the greatest concentration of climbs anywhere on the mountain". Most of the cliffs found here are east-facing, but there are exceptions, so comfortable microclimates can be found in all but the hottest times of the year.

Windy Point is a vista/overlook spot where one can see the entire Tucson valley, making it a popular stop for tourists. Parking and bathrooms can be found here, as well as a plethora of high quality climbing routes.

Getting There

Catalina Highway.

Most of the climbs can be best accessed by parking in the large lot at Windy Point, or in one of the pullouts just downhill from Windy Point proper. See individual crag descriptions for best approach.

Dustin Payne contemplating the blankness

Wild Thing 5.13b/c 8a+ 29 X- E7 6c  AZ : Mount Lemmon (Santa Catalin... : ... : Tin Can Alley
This phenomenal line may be the best at the grade on the mountain. Cast off through precarious terrain to the high first bolt. Clip one more and begin tackling the mind blowingly blank face through immediately difficult and varied sequences. Fierce and unrelentingly technical climbing on a variety of holds brings you to two vicious cruxes stacked at around the 80ft mark. Wildy big moves bring you to the chains. Its not over till its over....[more]   Browse More Classics in AZ
