Muir Valley in RRG uses "dog tags" and embeds them in the rock at the base of each route (see link below for an example). With new route being created quicker than guide books being updated it was quite helpful.

Pictures are what you need to figure stuff out. Even if you say just left of the tree... a few years later the tree is no longer there.
