Does this helmet fit? The fat guy on the right, not the kid....

The nice lady at the local climbing outfitter says yes...the guide that I've been out with 4 times now didn't say anything...but to me it just looks goofy.

For the curious...This is Sentry Ledge on the South Face of Looking Glass (NC) last Friday.

Hard to tell from the photo, but it doesn't look goofy to me.

Try this, unbuckle the chin strap and shake your head a bit. The helmet should stay on, without the strap.

I have that helmet too. It seems to sit high (and look goofy) on me too.

Main use of a helmet is to protect the top of your head from rock falls. Looks like it covers that ;). Also make sure it covers the back of your head well in case of a inverted fall.

What Frank said - does it stay securely in place on your head without benefit of the chin strap? If so, and it's also not cutting off your circulation anywhere, then I'd say you're good.

This. I teach it as "Yes (nods head furiously), my helmet is on. No (shakes head furiously), it is not coming off".

Thanks all....I'm used to ice hockey gear that sits low, covers the ears, etc.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
