I was hoping to see a picture of a middle mark and have me a good laugh.

Come to think of it, the rope strands are dyed separately and then woven into the finished rope you pictured. The discoloration is clearly from some liquid being dripped onto the finished rope. You know what, just return that. Who the hell knows what it is?
I just bought the same rope (Edelweiss Curve 9.8, same colorway) from Outdoor Gear Exchange and it has an almost identical black mark. My first thought was that maybe the ink of the middle mark rubbed off onto that spot, because it's almost identical in color to the middle mark (purplish black). But not knowing for sure what it was, I originally planned to send it back to OGE.
I went to the Backcountry outlet store in SLC to pick up a new one, but the one they brought me from the back had a similar mark. Way smaller and more faint, but still there. The mark on the rope at Backcountry was right under one of the black plastic straps that keep the rope coiled, so my current best guess is that those plastic straps must just rub on the rope a bunch during shipping and handling and whatnot, leaving the blackish stain. That's actually what the OGE customer service guy asked me first when I contacted them about returning it - "is it under one of the straps?" So maybe this is a known issue.
Still waiting to hear back from Edelweiss. The core feels strong and the sheath looks unaffected except that it's a different color, so it's probably just fine.
