Climbing in NYC

Hello all,

I recently moved to New York City to pursue my Master's degree, and I was hoping to find a nearby climbing gym. I'm living in the Bronx near Fordham University, so I was wondering if anyone knew of anything nearby. I like to use climbing as a way to de-stress between studying (as well as longer climbing trip, etc.), so the closer the better, but I didn't see anything when I looked online. Does anyone happen to know of anything? Or know of any other similar activities I can look in to in the Bronx? This whole city thing is new to me- I've lived most of my life in western Colorado, and have more recently I've lived in southeastern Utah and Washington state, where there is very easy access to the great outdoors.

Also, I don't have a car, so anything that isn't easily accessible by public transportation is probably a no-go for now.

Thanks!

Nothing really climbable in the Bronx. Best bet is at Inwood or Central Park. Look up Rat Rock, Cat Rock and Chess Rock.

Does Fordham have a rock wall in their student gym? The closest gym I can think of is Steep Rock Bouldering, small place off of the 96th st stop on the 6 train. Super small gym and only bouldering, but great people and the routes are changed weekly.

But ya check out Inwood and Central Park while the weather is nice. Worthless Boulder is near the top, west end of Central Park, around 110th.

Good luck!

As far as gyms go there's the rock club (TRC) in new rochelle....short walk from the metro north station in New Roc. Im also certain that there's a Fordham U van at TRC weekly, you may want to look into that. There's the Cliffs in Valhalla, again metro north...but more of a cab ride. Cliffs in LIC and then Brooklyn boulders which are a decent subway ride into brooklyn from Fordham.

Central Park is still your best bet for any outdoor bouldering.

I'm also in the Bronx. The Rock Club is okay. My university has a good carpool program for getting there.
Some decent bouldering at Ft. Tryon park. Not much info on MP unfortunately. PM me if you want more info.

The Powerlinez are ~45 min away and the Gunks ~1.5hrs. You can find carpools on these fb groups:

There's a bunch up there to do outdoors. Check out the NYC bouldering guide from sharp end books. As for indoor gyms, that's a little tougher!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
