Description Suggest change

The RV Wall is located on Spud Mountain or Potato Hill just below the summit of Coal Bank Pass; Elevation 10,600'. The climbs are on a quartzite band of stone ranging in height from 40'-90'. So far there are fifteen bolted routes and one pure crack route. The rock is good for the most part, and the views and setting are by far the best part of climbing here. The wall faces north and northeast and receives morning sun only. It's the perfect place to go on a hot summer day.

HELMETS ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED HERE AS THE PLACE IS STILL QUITE FRESH!

Also, if the nubes out there haven't figured it out yet -  the carabiners are on the anchors for a reason ... like to clean and lower off easily. PLEASE STOP TAKING THEM!

Getting There Suggest change

Drive 30 miles north of Durango on US Hwy 550, and park on the tippy top of the pass. The area can be accessed by walking for 10 minutes from the RV parking area and bathroom. There are two approach trails:

1. The Northwest approach; better access for shorter wall or "Grotto":

Go right past the bathrooms and towards the power lines, heading east. After descending past the first hump under the power lines, look for a spring, and follow that drainage to the north. The wall appears right away, and there are several shorter routes in this shady nook (5-10 minutes).

2. The Northeast approach; better access for taller wall or "North Shore":

From the parking area, head south next to the highway (east side of road) for about 100 yards, and look for an older road grade. You should begin to see cairns from this point forward. At an obvious puddle or spring, take a sharp left to the east, and follow a faint trail that brings you down to the crag. Follow cairns and head downhill for about 200 vertical feet, and look for large opening and top of the wall with views of Kendal Mountain. From the top of the wall, you can rap in (Winnebago Warrior) or you can walk around to get to the base (10-15 minutes).
