Hi MP, I'm setting off on a long road trip (maybe 4 months) in a few weeks. Coming from the east coast, and want to see a bunch of places in the mountainous west and west coast.
I'm also hoping to climb. I'll be in Colorado/ Wyoming/ Utah/ Idaho in September and am looking for crag recommendations--somewhere I can stay and hang out for a week or two. Anyone have a lead on crags that:
1- have a lot of moderate routes. I'm a new leader, and haven't been climbing all summer b/c of work. Trad and sport, no alpine.
2- low cost camping (anything under $15 is fine)
3- Easy to find partners.
Happy for any recommendations for October and November spots too. Yosemite and Moab seem to be popular that time of year but I'm definitely not ready for those spots. My crack skills are atrocious.
Cochise Stronghold sounds right up your alley if you make it down to southern Az. Plenty of moderate sport face climbing with nice temps in the fall and free camping (on the west side) and low to *no* approach.
I'm personally a huge fan of the Zion/St. George area. Plenty of free camping and moderate route to be had with very reasonable approaches. You would be there my favorite time of year as well. Have Fun, where ever you end up! Let me know if your considering it and I can make more specific recommendations on routes and camping.
Thanks everyone. I think AZ and southern UT might be too off-route for me, as I want to visit some people in Montana and Washington after I'm past CO. I'll be going through AZ/ southern UT later in the season though, so if the temps hold long enough, they might be good options.
Smith looks awesome for October. Good chance I'll go there.
