Hanging a Hangboard from the Ceiling - Ideas?

Hi y'all -

Figure someone here might have some good advice before I try out this idea . . .

So just moved into a new place, which is a rental property. None of the doorways work well for a temporary hangboard, but there are some bike hooks screwed into 2x4s attached to the floor joists in the garage.

What I'd like to do is place eye bolts into the same 2x4 and into the joist, and hang an Awesome Woody board from it. ( awesomewoodys.com/)

So here is my question -

There are two separate 2x4s side by side in two joists. Would it make more sense to add one eyebolt in each 2x4 and pull essentially straight down, or have four eyebolts so each end is doubled and the weight is distributed between four points, but would be pulling at an angle?

Anyone tried this idea? Input appreciated.

Not exactly sure of your setup, but my basement has 3x8 ceiling joists. I mounted my hangboard to plywood, and attached some short sections of 2x4 to the plywood. I screwed brackets to the front and back of the joists, and front and back of the 2x4s, and put a bolt through all four brackets (on each side, 8 total).

Works well and then I can take it down when I'm not using it. There are probably easier solutions but I have a shared basement so this worked for me.

This is a very high tech rendering so try to stay with me here. Basically two triangles mounted to the ceiling with plywood connecting them at the bottom with the hangboard mounted to the plywood.

Similar idea if you wanted to put the hangboard in the corner of a room. triangle of 2x4s (or bigger) in the corner with plywood mounted across the front.

Hopefully that helps. If not, just start firing screws.

each hook is rated for 100lbs? so i would go with at least 2 hooks.

Since you are going to use a hangboard that hangs, I will do it like this:

1) Cut a small square piece of thick plywood (18 mm ). with the the dimensions of the joist.

2) Install the t-nut in the middle of the piece of plywood (i always glue them and hit it with a hammer). buy a climbing bolt hanger and a short bolt screw and screw it in the t-nut.

3) If the tip of the screw still shows in the back part. you can put some washers between the hanger and the screw bolt or drill the wood joist with a bit that goes inside the t-nut (so you dont damage the thread) just so you can set the playwood flat against the joist.

4) Screw the piece around the hanger in a distance half of the center and edges. (6 screws will be enough.)

basically the same thing i used at one of our places, except i had the (red) hangboard on the 'left' side of the vertical plywood. worked great.

I have also seen some screw on jugs going along the angled support to add some variety.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
