Rest day ideas (RMNP, Grand Tetons, Winds)

Hi everyone,

I'm on a road trip until August 20 and would like to find some fun things to do in between my climbing days to take full advantage of the areas I'm traveling through. Going to be in RMNP, Cirque Towers, and the Grand Tetons over the next 3 weeks so my question is what are some of the "must do" leisurely activities (deep water soloing in glacial lakes, cliff jumping, hot springs, beautiful hikes, or just good restaurants/breweries to go to, etc.) that you guys know of in those areas?

Thanks!

Regards,

Dan Evans

I've enjoyed fly fishing in RMNP and the Winds on test days. Especially in the winds. You don't have a good fisherman to catch fish in the winds.

Granite Hot Springs between Pinedale and Jackson. About 15 miles off Hwy 191 in a beautiful setting in the Gros Ventre range. An outdoor pool built by the CCC in the 1930's. I think it costs about $6.

Snake River Brewery in Jackson. Good brew and good food.

The upper geyser basin in Yellowstone has the 5 largest predictable geysers in the world which includes Old Faithful. Old Faithful erupts every 90 minutes for about 4 minutes to about 100 ft. Or less. Grand geyser, one of the other five, erupts less frequently but goes to over 200 ft. And lasts over twenty minutes. Pack a lunch and go to the visitor center and they will have the predicted times of the five geysers. You can often catch all five of them if you plan out your day - with many hot pools and animals (bison) to see on the walks between the geysers.

I think granite creek hot springs is closed due to the Cliff Creek Fire: inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/4…

I second Snake River Brewery. There is some cliff jumping at Fremont Lake in Pinedale, but I never got to check it out when I was in the area, you could probably find some information online though. You might check out the paintbrush canyon loop in the Tetons. I started it last year before getting turned around by snow in May and it was beautiful, I intend to finish the hike when I return to Jackson this weekend. When will you be in Wyoming?

While you're in the Tetons, head north to Yellowstone National Park.
Wildlife all over the place, waterfalls, and thermal features--geysers,
mud pots, hot springs. Not to be missed. Go out to the Lamar Valley and you could see wolves and bears.

You can avoid paying the $6 for the granite creek hot springs and jump in the river a little ways before the FS hot springs and if you wade the river there's a sweet little springs on the other side of the river. That was all very vague - but when I was there it was pretty obvious where to turn off for the free hot springs. It's right downstream from a fairly large waterfall.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
