Hey MP:

The second installment of Ask a Badass, an interview series we've created in partnership with Black Diamond in which YOU ask the questions, is upon us.

Last month, we enjoyed the wisdom and snark of Hazel Findlay. Next up is Joe Kinder!

On Thursday (7/21/16), he'll choose your most interesting inquiries and write personal replies to them. Just add your questions to this forum thread, and he'll choose a handful to answer.

Plus, you could win stuff! Black Diamond has set aside three little prize packages which will go to the individuals who asked Joe’s favorite questions.

We did this with Tommy Caldwell earlier this spring, and he set some guidelines which apply here, too: "Ask me the most engaging, thought-provoking question you can think of. Note that I did not say weirdest question!"

So, what have you got for Joe?

He’s known for his work ethic (5.14d sport? 5.13+ trad? V13? Check, check, and check.), his inextinguishable psych (his use of exclamation points is second to none), owning up to missteps (he cut down a juniper tree while route developing, and the internet went crazy), and for just plain being a positive, inspiring guy to be around.

Fire away!

How do you maintain psych while training?

As a sponsored athlete, do you feel any external pressures to train at a high level or are you completely self motivated?

Thanks!

Hi Joe-

I am curious on how you keep your psych up and what guilty pleasures you have that may hold you back from climbing at your 'best' (Whether your best is grade driven or self confidence/mental health/enjoyment of climbing)? Food/activities/lazy days?

Thanks, Cheers

Marc

Hi Joe,

How do you maintain the gains you've made while training at home when you're on the road for extended periods of time? Which single sacrifice of home life has been most difficult for you to make when you travel for climbing, and why? Finally, where do you see yourself when you're in your 50s?

Thanks for taking the time!

Hey everyone. Just poping in to see what kinds of questions are coming my way. I gotta say.... These are looking good. Dig em.

I'm stoked to be connecting with you all this way. Talk soon!!!

Joe, what is your proudest failure in climbing?

That route or problem that you just couldn't quite put to bed, but where you are still totally satisfied with the outcome and not sending. And why are you proud of it?

Joe,

What is your climbing genesis story? (what got you started and what was the first moment you realized you had the drive to be a badass?)

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

If you only had one month left to live, what crags around the world would you go back to that really inspired you and why? Besides climbing, what would you do with your remaining time here?

Cheers!

Josh

Joseph--

So as to not forget your NE roots--what wall has the better concentration of quality lines--Shagg or Waimea?

How do you stay excited to keep going? What changes do you make to keep it interesting? Travel to foreign countries? Discover more and more in your favorite areas? Teaching and mentoring others? When do you feel you'll stop?

Joe,

Imagine your at a crag alone bouldering and a brand new climber comes strolling up with a borrowed crash pad and his first pair of shoes. He has no idea who you are but your working projects on the same boulder....him a V easy you a V ridiculous. He has potential, but is struggling and could use a few words of wisdom. What would you tell him to stoke the climbing fire that's been blazing in you?

Hey Joe! Where you going with that gun in your hand?..... Wait nevermind that song has just been stuck on repeat around here.

Anyways, 3 simple fun questions:

  • What is your favorite beer?
  • What is your guilty pleasure snack?
  • Share a story of the weirdest/coolest/most-intriguing local you have met while climbing through out the world?

Hey Joe,

Are there any other sports or hobbies that really inspire you in the way that climbing does? I'm thinking something along the lines of Cedar Wright and his new love of paragliding... If so, what are they, why do they inspire you, and how do you fit them in with climbing?

Thanks!

Have you ever tried Ice climbing, a real mans sport? If not, why? Any plans to in the future?

Joe,

The sport of climbing has grown and evolved immensely in the last decade. What excites you about the future of climbing and/or what do you fear most for the future of climbing?

Thanks!

As a person and a climber, what would you like people to say about you and the legacy that you have left behind?

Hey Joe, Do you happen to have Rock n' Resole's number? I've been trying to get ahold of those guys...

Also, how's the development going out in Elko, NV? That place looks outrageous! Any future plans or projects out that way?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
