Bald Eagle Peak: Dusky Gem Of The Kern River Valley Suggest change

This is one of several beautiful hidden gems within the Kern River Valley region and sees only a few souls throughout its short climbing season. Located just southwest of Lake Isabella up in the northern edge of the Piute Mountains at 6000', Bald Eagle Peak is home to many high quality multi-pitch and single pitch routes. Historically, Bald Eagle Peak saw initial development in the mid 1980's by then locals Eddie "E.C." Joe, Herb Laeger, Chris Brewer and Vaino Kodas to name a few. Later on in the 90's, development picked up with Herb Laeger and Mark 'Marco' Krebs teaming up together and hatching some stellar area classics, such as 'Electric Puppy Machine' (.10d), 'Confidence Crisis' (.11c/d), Talons (.11c) and 'Halloween Party' (.10b), along with many others that standout on the classics list. Most of the routes (ranging between 5.9 to 5.12d) were traditionally bolted ground up with chained bolted anchors. Even today, the area has seen several new thoughtful lines go in.

Bald Eagle's profile is mainly south to southwest facing, offering up an ideal option during the late fall and early winter months when other areas above on the Kern Plateau are closed in preparation for the winter. Spring time can also be an option as well. However, the temps can be a bit warmer than desired and ticks can be an issue. The approach trail has been rehabilitated and access restored these last few years, partly due from a fire that impacted the area several years back. Several scrub oaks had been destroyed and many blocked access to the Main Wall. Bottom line....Bald Eagle and the quality lines await you!

Getting There Suggest change

**NOTE**:

The Springs Saddle Rd closes seasonally, typically after the first snow or cold rain period. Check with the Kernville District Ranger Station for closures/openings before hatching plans.

Drive to Lake Isabella via Hwy 178. Take Exit 42 to Lake Isabella/Bodfish onto Elizabeth Norris Rd. At the T-intersection, turn right onto Lake Isabella Blvd, heading south through the small hamlet of Bodfish. After Bodfish, the road becomes Caliente Bodfish Rd. The road climbs and snakes its way up the mountain. The road will eventually reach an apex/saddle. Slow down here and veer off left onto a dirt road. Use caution when crossing over since oncoming traffic is hard to see. This dirt road (27S02 - Saddle Springs Road) heads off to the left. The road is fairly bumpy and several spots are rocky at times. For the most part, 2-wheel drive vehicles with decent clearance will make it. However, if the area has seen rain or snow, 4-wheel drive vehicles are advised. Drive 5.3 miles along the narrow gauge road until a small pull off to the right is seen. Park here. It will accommodate 2 vehicles. There is another spot on the left, several yards past the pull out that can take 2 other vehicles. The approach trail starts at the end of the pull out. There are two trails: one heading straight and one splits left. Take the later trail, which heads downhill for 20 yards and then heads northwest as the beauty of Bald Eagle Peak comes into view.  This trail contours below a ridgeline and is well cairned. Hike to the saddle of the ridgeline (approximately 3/4 miles). Once at the saddle, look for a fainter trail to the left (marked with a cairn). This leads to the Main Wall and the Lower Buttress, which is decently marked with cairns. If you hike past the saddle, this portion of the trail leads to an off shoot trail up and on the left (100 yards), which gains access to the upper buttresses with several single pitch sport climb. If you continue on, it will eventually lead to the summit of the peak.
