Slung plates on P3 of Hobbit Book - psychological pro at best, false hope at worst. I doubt they would have held because of potential outward forces in a fall. Note that there is a definite distinction between slinging a knob/plate and tying it off! Also note the extra weight added to the bottom of the slings to keep rope movement from dislodging the slings...
