Climbing in Bonaire and Curacao

Yes, there is climbing in these places but I wouldn't climb without a guide here, due to access issues and just general safety.

What is there is very sharp limestone climbing with no routes set up and you would have to find a way to safely anchor. Much of the rock is brittle and quite sharp; it could slice your 9.8 rope easily. I'm guessing you could boulder easily on the beaches of Curacao if you want to get in some quick, easy and cheap climbing.

I was only able to find one guide for each island but I give them both top scores for safety. Both had access to areas and permission--something you would need to pay attention to because it isn't obvious when you area on private land and it might be against the law on public land. So, if you want to shell out some $$ for fun climbing, then I would go with a guide. They were both very mindful of safety and, while neither offered the type of challenge I might have wanted elsewhere, it was just a fun experience to get out there and do something that I didn't expect to do.

Bring shoes and a harness (and helmet), as equipment is limited. Frankly, I was just happy to get out there and enjoy the experience!

Hello, I am planning vacation to Cuacao. Can you provide information on the guide you used?
Thanks

I used Vertical Adventures ( curacao.com/en/directory/do…)

Email Albert at verticalfuncuracao@yahoo.com

Note that he only operates on weekends or (with notice) sometimes weekdays. I was able to catch him on a Saturday morning with very little notice.

Thanks for the quick reply. Looking forward to the trip and being able to climb will make it that much better.

Hope you have a great vacation!
He's highly trained and his setup was very safe. As I said, the climbing is very easy but the whole experience was fun. Enjoy!

I was just the for spring break this year. Most beaches have bouldering on either side of them as the beaches are actually created by breaks in the Limestone that surrounds the island. I would recommend taking a pair of shoes you don't mind getting wet, since many of the problems were oceanside. Also, check out curacao.for91days.com , it's a Blog by two guys that spent 91 days thoroughly traveling the island. Have a wonderful time there.

I'm going to be in Curacao shortly - July 16-26. I'm not sure when you're planing your trip for. I did contact Albert to see if he could take me out. He offered to take me for 3 hours, for $120 for 1 person, $160 for 2.

I did ask about the grading for climbing in the area, he said he wasn't sure. If I go out for the day with him, I'll provide some feedback on the climbing options.
