Hello,
I live in Boulder Colorado

I just woke up to find my car was busted into last night and my climbing bag was stolen. My bag was a brand new Red Black Diamond stone 45back pack. I had a full rack, doubles in black diamond C4 .3-3 with one C3 #2 and #1( yellow and Red) . with various other cams such as fixe green alien, metolius off set 1/2 inch blue yellow. and Black diamond #4. My rack was definitely not new but not old. All cams had thumb loops. I had 14 alpine draws of various shapes and sizes. about 8 Black diamond nylon slings mostly blue and grey with black diamond bent gates and wire gates on them. Also another 4 mammut dynema slings 3 red and one grey with black diamond wire gates. Black diamond harness, Petzl gri gri, Black diamond simple guide atc, white mammut helmet,
La Sportiva Muira's that have been recently resoled. And about 6 various size locking carabiners. Mostly black diamond.

Yes I left my gear in my car. My mistake I know. Hard lesson to learn. I have been climbing for 14 years and I have always left my gear in my car.

I am not certain the thief is a climber because there were five other cams lying about my trunk next to my bag. including a new #6. a sort of new #4 and various other cams clipped together. and two sets of stoppers. all lying next to bag. oh and a crash pad.

I am posting this in the hopes that the internet can help me. Maybe i get my gear back maybe not. Doesn't hurt to try.
Possible let me know of where a thief might try to sell random climbing gear. Yes I will check craigslist. Just maybe there is another place I don't know about.

I know Mountain Project can be pretty ruthless sometimes. I know I made a mistake. If you feel like commenting on that sure go ahead. But ultimately I am just looking for help.
Maybe keep an eye out for some one trying to sell a full rack. Maybe let me know if there is a place I can look for stuff like that.

Either way Safe climbing folks.

Michael

that sucks.

in the meantime, make a claim against your rental/home owner's insurance. at least you'll get some $$$ back.

It would be helpful to know where this occurred.

Makes my blood boil and it wasn't even my gear... Really just pisses me off that people can't just leave other people's stuff alone.

Good luck on the recovery try local pawn shops or even better call around today and let the pawn shops know that your stuff was ganked you may get lucky. Also resale shops around your area.

I live in Boulder Colorado. I have lived here for 6 years and never had a problem. I have heard stories though. Now I am one of them. Shoot dang!!

climbing friend,

most unfortunate, yes, the thief shall place his hand atop pine stump and I will sever it off at the wrist with sharp boulder, or perhaps pound it as pulp with my gigantic hammer of war. I am for hoping you get your gears back.

Do you perhaps have a cousin named Seymour?

Sorry to hear about this.

In addition to Craigslist, keep an eye on Ebay and places like gear trade.
The advice about filing an insurance claim was good.

Was your gear marked in any way? Tape, nail polish, etc. Will keep an eye out around Fort Collins.

Mike Jones, unfortunately my gear did NOT have any tape or nail polish on them. I do appreciate the lookout though. Thanks

I would also check trash cans and dumpsters in your area. Often times they will break into a car and steal a backpack that is visible and ditch it to get rid of evidence if they don't find anything they think is valuable (computer, cell phone, etc.)

The person who broke in obviously doesn't know the value of gear as he didn't steal your #6 as well.

That or he just really doesn't like to climb off-widths

Trice,

thanks for the advice. I did spend 90 minutes walking around the neighborhood looking in dumpsters and parks. I was thinking the same thing when they didn't take the crash pad or other cams.

thanks

Michael

I live in Boulder and have had my car broken into as well. All for a radio they might have gotten $10 for since who the hell buys hot car stereos anymore. They destroyed every window and molding since they were shitty thieves.

Just saw on the news that Colorado car thefts are up 30%. Good to keep in mind. Might take a look and make sure I don't have anything in there now.

Back east in the city you wouldn't lock your doors. The crackheads would bust out your window for a penny. Better to just let them rummage.
