Affordable San Francisco housing for a climber?

Hi all!

This may be a bit early (and unconventional for the forum), but I'm moving to San Francisco for a full-time job in August. Finding housing is such a nightmare in the city, so I thought I'd reach out and see if any climbers anticipated having a spot in their apartment around that time frame.

I am a 23 year old female who enjoys trad/alpine climbing in Yosemite and the Sierras, splitboarding, and mountain biking. Major weekend warrior lifestyle - it's rare for me to spend a weekend at home! I'd love to live with like-minded people. I'm not opposed to sharing rooms, etc, to save money. Just looking for a roof to sleep under and a place to store my gear. My only preference is that I'd love to be within daily driving distance to a climbing gym. (Hopefully Planet Granite, but would consider Mission Cliffs/Dogpatch as my home gym instead.)

Let me know if you or anyone else might be looking for a roommate this August!

Can't offer a room, and live in the East Bay, but... I used Pad Mapper when looking for a room when I relocated from Denver, and when I wanted to move to Oakland. Good luck, finding housing out here can really feel like an uphill battle.

Update: still looking for housing, particularly something that could start either August or September. I would like to live in SF itself rather than the East Bay, etc.

It may help if you gave people a better sense of what your monthly rent budget is... "affordable" means different things to different people

Matt,

Yes, you're right, thanks. I should definitely clarify a few things:

-I have a bit of a preference for the Inner/Outer Richmond and Sunset because they tend to be a bit cheaper and are reasonably close to Planet Granite.

-The upper end of my budget is currently around $1200/mo, but I'm always willing to reconsider depending on the housing situation, which is why I didn't specify previously.

-I do understand the nature of the housing situation in SF. Last year, I shared a room in the Inner Richmond for $650/mo, but I don't really expect to find a great deal like that again. That being said, I'm totally happy to share a room or live in a closet that's only big enough for a twin bed if it'll help cut costs. The more money I can save, the more climbing trips I can do on my weekends!

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far.

Hi,

Just wondering if you are still looking for an affordable housing situation? If so, I am too. I currently climb at PG, and want to live closer to the gym. I currently live in Oakland, and its become too much of a hike back and forth. I also want something more affordable. I am gone pretty much every weekend climbing. I would be looking for September.

I look forward to hearing from you. I can be reached at ravihar@yahoo.com

Why SF? You could find things in Oakland or Berkeley/Albany/El Cerrito that are close to BART and in your price range. I commute to SF every day and it's fine. You'd have access to GWP or Ironworks and backyard crags in the Berkeley hills. Plus you get out of town to the mountains faster.

I totally agree with Daniel :) Nothing related to housing but I'm always looking for female backcountry buddies! I'm also a split boarder.

I work in South SF, so I'm not thrilled about the commute from Oakland, etc. I really like the Crissy Field PG because they have a bunch of crack climbs and decent setting. My boyfriend and all my friends live in SF proper. I like being near the beach, Golden gate park, and breweries for after-work runs/bonfires/beers.

That combination of factors makes me want to stay in SF. I know that it's possible to find some sort of space for under $1200/mo, as many of my friends have done it. I just thought I'd reach out and see if any climbers specifically would have space in their apartments, because it's nice to be around people with similar lifestyles!

Also, Mandy, I'd be happy to know some other female splitboarders! We'll have to get out this season. :)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
