Helmet Shade

A few years ago, before my first trip up el cap, my wife made me a removable neck shade for my helmet. It attached with three strips of velcro. Five years, four el cap routes and countless days climbing through the US and Europe it still performs wonderfully.

People have always complimented the design and said that they'd love to buy one. Finally, my wife (a silversmith by trade) has decided to produce more of them to sell. They are made of either bandanas or plain sun-proof cotton. Check out her Etsy shop and support a fellow climber!

Great idea and nice shop.
I hope you sell lots of them.

Have you detached and reattached the shade many times?
I wonder if the velcro would come unglued from the helmet if one removed it often. Or, is there rarely a reason for detaching it?

Thanks! No problem with either velcro detaching or wearing out. The bandana material of my original one is just starting to get sun bleached after almost five years, but the velcro is still rock solid. The one sided velcro tape is exceedingly strong (no peeling or other issues).

There was a thread on MP a few years go about visors for helmets. To complement your product:

I work with Velcro a lot and will add that when you peel off the plastic to stick it, it is stronger if you hit it with a flame. I usually use a torch and brush the flame very fast. I bet a lighter would work well too.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
