Hi all,
I'm a Noob to climbing. My partner and I took a beginner class @ Suicide rock and do a little gym practice. I'm looking for some 5.6 areas or less that we can climb/practice in the Baldy area. We basically will be belay climbing with a fixed anchor...so, no protection placement. We need some easy stuff that we can double rope. We live in Upland so, basically something we can drive to fairly close.
Suggestion?

Hey - there's obscure stuff out your way but you are also asking for a place with fixed anchors and you want low numbers too. Nothing worthwhile comes to mind at the moment. Can you drive somewhere else or is that not possible?

If you meant top roping, not sure. Otherwise...
You're reasonably close to Big Bear. Holcomb Valley is very beginner friendly with soft grades, positive edges and safe bolt spacing. There are many small obscure hidden treasures within Big Bear listed on MP.
As for Baldy, there is a hard area and scattered bouldering. Fun exploration.

Thanks for the replies. In doing the net search, maybe Rubidoux hills in Riverside might work(?) Anyone been there?

Mt. Rubidoux is great. I used to live in Upland and bouldered and TR'd at Mt. Rubidoux every morning before things got warm and I had to go to work. Also, try Box Springs across the valley (east of Riverside) when the weather colds off.

yeah, check out box springs. It is pretty short with fixed anchors for top roping. It gets shade in the afternoon at 4:30 or 5.
Have fun!

Yeah, Rubidoux has top ropes, particularly at the top of the hill. Lots of granite slabs and some high balls. E.g., Half Dome and Joe Brown Boulder. Stone Masters used to train there, plus some comps back in the day. (Bee Hive boulder problems was part of their circuit.)
It's a decent place to get your feet wet and develop footwork.

Mike,

Look up Riverside Rock CLimbers on Facebook. We have people in your area as well. Most of the group is pretty friendly and would be willing to show you guys around some local climbing. We were all beginners once and its hard to get practice when you have to lead routes to set up for top rope climbs.

Shit man, if no one else responds shoot me a message and I'll take you out for a day of skills building. Im not the most experienced (been climbing for 2 years and leading 1 year) but i'm overly safe and willing to teach you everything I know.

Daniel.

Mike. You might wish to go visit Stoney Point.

You will need to set up your own TR's
You will need some long slings.
You will need some biners, locking and non- locking
You will need to learn how to adjust those slings so your TR's work well.
Some of the large boulders have bolts on top.
Some of the popular TRs have bolts on top.
Some of the popular TR's need you to sling large boulders for your anchor.
Some will require gear, hexes, stoppers and cams.

Sounds like a hassle.... well its not, learn how to do all of this and learn how to make good TR set ups.... that will put you at the NEXT level in climbing.

This is the way it has been done for the last 80 years.

It was good enuf for Glen Dawson, Chuck Willts, Royal Robbins, Yvon Chounard, John Long, Jonny Bachar, Lynn Hill, Me and a whole bunch of folks who have gone on to bigger and better things.

Wishing you success, with your climbing.
