I am a recently separated army vet, who is lost in the sauce.

Heading to Yosemite for 2 months (maybe longer) to face something bigger than me.

Hoping to learn how to trad climb and make some great friends and memories!

Any thoughts, suggestions, comments???

I think this guy mentions some organizations about getting vets climbing. It's a good listen regardless:

Yo D, I'm a vet as well and feel you. As well as Vet Ex which was mentioned above, look into Paradox Sports and No Barriers as well. We're both based in Colorado, Paradox in Boulder and No Barriers in Fort Collins. Both have a lot going on for Vets, and Paradox will be doing an event in Yosemite over September 11th. Would be psyched to see you out there and get you involved in our community brother.

If in the valley stay in Camp 4. You will be able to find partners/mentors at Camp 4 also frequent El Cap bridge. Keep a full cooler of beer.
Most Yosemite climbers head to Tuolumne when it gets too hot.
You're going to have a great time!

Climbing would be a fantastic way to reintegrate to a new life. Adjusting to civilian living PLUS separation (I'm assuming from a relationship?) is a very, very hard thing to do, and it's going to hurt at times. Alcohol - even beer - not a good solution and will make adjustment and finding a lasting peace harder - just my own experience.

Wishing you the best man, climb hard and stay safe. Be your own person who climbs, rather than trying to fit into some kind of image of a climber. You already have more than enough guts by evidence of your service. Have a good time out there!

Hey Dustin,
There's an event at the New River Gorge in WV where vets are taken climbing. I believe it is held in the early Fall. My buddy has volunteered for it in the past and has raved about it. I would also recommend checking in with your local VA. They could probably hook you up with services close to the valley while you're there, and they probably are aware of other similar programs as I've already mentioned.

I spent some time in the valley during a period of turmoil in my life and it helped. In addition to stuffing my body into as many cracks as possible, I also found swimming in the Merced took the edge off. I hope you find what you're looking for, and hit me up when you get back to the SE if you would like to go climbing sometime.

Dustin, I'm a disabled Vet and just went through a divorce.
I've been climbing off and on since the late 90's. I've climbed in Yosemite many times. I'll be in TM the first week of July for at least a month. We should hook up and hang and climb.
I have a rack and rope, etc.
