Would you replace a .3 C4 with another brand?

I lost a BD .3 C4 last weekend. I planned on buying another until the idea of trying out Mastercams entered my mind. I could ask this when I get to the shop but thought I might get some interesting replies here.

So what you think? Buy another C4? Buy a #2 Mastercam? Maybe totem basic?

Depends on where you climb but Green Totem basic.

Yes, I'm not a fan of C4 below 0.5

x4 version, C3 yellow, or totem basic

The small mastercam's are great but I think their sizing fits perfectly between the BD sizes so I don't know if they would really be a one for one replacement. I think that the BD 0.3 fits between the yellow and blue mastercam so you might want both of them.

green alien is smaller, but I tend to think of it as a good option in that size.

I've heard a lot of climbers say this. Could you please elaborate as to why? I personally have the Metolius Master Cams in sizes below the 0.5 C4 and am happy with them. But, I did notice the .3 and .4 C4's have a larger range than my small Metolius cams, so I sometimes wonder if I'm missing out....

The heads of C4s are much wider. About an entire lobe wider. As in if you would need to chop the 4th lobe off a .3 C4 to make it fit in a pin scar that a blue totem fits in.

I really like the additional width and burliness of the 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 C4s. They are definitely more stout feeling than the X4 counterpart. For areas with a lot of parallel cracks, the head width hasn't been a problem for me. However, I also carry some narrower 4 lobe cams and frequently have C3s or TCUs racked, which fit into narrower placements. But if a placement will take both, I reach for the C4 before the C3,etc every time.

I'm a big fan of the 0.3 C4 and would definitely replace mine if I lost it. I picked one up after I already had TCU's and Mastercams figuring I'd only occasionally use it. Turns out it's one of my most reached for pieces. Like was mentioned earlier, I just like the range and solid feel when it's placed.

I love mine, but I match them with TCUs. I love my TCU's much much more.

Sounds almost exactly like the C4 vs X4

That might help you on sizes, you'll have to double check the actual C4 range though. Pretty sure that X4 and C4 .3 are a tad off.

I have an X4 and a blue totem cam (not basic). I find that the totems actually fill the the X4 range perfectly. I went with the totems because I frequently climb on fairly large crystal granite, when I can't get the lobes quite parallel I'd rather be above a totem.

I am a huge fan of the totem cams. I ripped four pieces during a fall while aid climbing, the yellow totem held( I was starting to pick up some speed). It was placed in an old flared pin scar. They are my most trustworthy cam.

if you have the money, go with the totem (not basic). If not, i'd go with a red WC zero if you can find one.

It depends where you're climbing. A .3 and 4 are totally bomber and very durable for the size. They don't fit in as many spots as the aliens and stuff like that.

If you're going to be falling a lot and durability is key, I'd stick with the C4's. If you're probably not going to fall much but are more concerned about fitting in every nook and cranny, look at the aliens.

They'll all catch a fall. It's just a matter of whether they get tweaked.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
