Camping Near Donner Summit

Well, looking for some free or cheap camping near Donner Summit. Planning to be there 2 to 5 weeks with my wife and six month old. (Car camping) No trailer, just our tent, but would be nice to leave things set-up long term instead of packing up everyday.

Would be nice to have a panic table, but.....

One place i have had good luck, left tent up for a week, free, easy access car or truck is:
Head north on 89 from 80. Some 6 miles north of 80 (+/-) there is a picnic area on the right, east side of the road. Directly across the hwy is a dirt road which goes up into the forest. Take this (not the picnic area). I like taking the right fork and going up about 200m.
Been a year+ since i camped here, but this might work.
Garbage Rock is another idea. You need to ask around for directions.
Be aware that for ALL outdoor flame you need a permit. Free either at calfire stations, ranger stations, or online. Ok, smoking is excluded....
