I have friends that just loudly taunt the smokers, which of course leaves me apoplectic because, hey, free country.

Got the idea from an old George Carlin bit. A few people laughed and the smoker gave me a dirty look but I'm a really big guy (but very mellow/not aggressive), so think he was maybe a little intimidated to say anything...

That's right- Steve Martin, not Carlin. My mistake.

I usually ignore smokers and try to move upwind but there was that one time (guess I was being a jerk but it was pretty funny)

"Leave the addictions at home". Think about what you said for even one second.

Unless you're equally concerned about campfire smoke you're being a hypocrite.

Dude a friend of mine leads ice and smokes.. Sometimes tobacco sometimes pot. I don't even drink but I could care less. It's doesn't affect me at all and I'm amazed at his skills.

I've seen a fire going at Champney Falls off the Kanc in NH and Haffner Creek more than once.

It seems rude to me. Outdoors, cigarette smoke is only slightly annoying. If they like smoking enough that the risk of cancer is worth it for them, I'd feel selfish asking them not to on account of the minuscule damage it does to my day. That said, that farting story is hilarious.

I've seen them at crags too, but that's irrelevant.
I've seen them all the time in places " I expect clean mountain air". If you're so concerned about "clean mountain air" I expect you to stay far away from campfires when you're in the great outdoors, otherwise you lack a coherent ideology.

Agreed, clean air is a big part of the mountain, outdoor experience. My sinuses get really irritated and clog from cigarette smoke. At the crag it could be 5-10 feet away. The vaping and weed smoke don't bother my sinuses so much. I've read that vaping smoke has the same chemicals as cigarette smoke, however... the flavored aroma isn't as harsh?

I think it's fine to ask someone to stop - but my concern would be more for the fragile forest as opposed to my lungs. If a stray lit cigarette end hit the tinder...especially where I climb, well - goodbye forest.

Owen, Your posts beg for this video. Thank you for making that possible, once again.

Some would say climbing is addictive. Should we all just stay home and mess around on our systems board?

Seriously though, I don't smoke nor do I enjoy smelling it but folks have the right to smoke if they please just don't blow it in my face and we're good.

Nah, my grandma knitted and smoked like a chimney. Probably not the best hobby for the OP.
