Where are the Arkansas climbers?!?!?!?!
I just moved to the state a few days ago and I'm ready to send! I'll be living in Hot Springs NP but I've got the weekends free and I've got a car. I can climb most 5.10s but I am relatively new to climbing outside. |
Hey Zachary, I go down to climb horseshoe or Sams area at least a couple weekends a month. At the moment I'm nursing a knee injury from a zipline accident, but I'll pm you so we can stay in touch. Good luck meeting other people too! |
Arkansas has a fairly active facebook group. |
Thanks C. Archibald and Jonathan! I'm really psyched about meeting new climbers! |
Zach, the best areas are horseshoe canyon, Sam's throne, and possibly cowell area. Fern is a neat area but it's on the harder side. |
Those are not the 'best' areas, only the most well known. |
What are your suggestions JD? |
Anyone have time for a fern trip later today? Very last minute... |
Well for sport in the 5.10 range, horseshoe probably is better for having the most things to work on, but the setting is crowded, pay to climb, and not very adventurous. You will find high aualitu 5.10s in most areas, they just arent as concentrated. Candy mountain has a couple of phenominal 10s, and cave creek has some ok ones. Rock creek (my fav) has a few great 10s. Hudson mountain has a few. Theae are some of the more scenic areas in all the state, and they are always pretty empty. |
JD, I can see where you're coming from. Some might call them the best because there's hundreds of routes all within walking distance of each other. I love it when school starts and all the kids are gone, and Horseshoe really empties out and you only see two or three other groups the whole day. |

Ive heard a lot about it and have friends who go there all the time. I know that there is a lot of moderates there, and some development is happening there like at big piney Creek, but that's it |

Jamestown has a similar vibe to horseshoe, route-wise. It is more remote and the camping is fun on top of the cliff. Plus the areas is climber-owned. the routes are shorter though, typically under 50 ft. High concentration of moderates, not a ton of quality hard lines. new stuff being added all the time though. |
