recently stayed at the Gunks AAC campground with two other climbers. With the preserve membership that was $8 per person per night.

Can't get much cheaper than that.

You get what you pay for.

Show up at any time after about 6pm and good luck finding a parking spot that's not a mile down the road.

Show up at a reasonable hour and put up your tent and you have a little space. Wake up in the morning and can't even get out of your tent, because there's only an inch between your tent and the one next to it. Not to mention that if you manage to get out of your tent, you can't walk back to the restaurant or your car without walking on tents the entire way.

Oh and then there is the fact that if it happens to rain you wake up in a swamp.

But the pizza is not bad, if you don't mind waiting in line for 30 minutes to order and then waiting at least 30 minutes for it to come out...

I'll take Lago Linda any day...

I really dislike the federal government owning half the state of Utah but there is no shortage of free BLM camping. All you have to do is keep the cows under control.

Any particular reason? There doesn't seem to be a major shortage of land in UT? Outsider, curious.

Why? How is it affecting you?
BTW, the figure is closer to 70% - BLM, NPS, USFS, DoD, et al.

Horseshoe Canyon Ranch in AR is $5/person/night and $5/climber/day. I guess some AAC fees don't look so bad. Was that per person or per tent at AAC sites?

I prefer wilderness areas. Approach hikes make for a better time imho. Less people, noise, etc.

That's a good thought rging, then the amount of climbing would be cut in half because of access issues on private property. You're not one of these ranchers who pretend to have a beef about too much federal control when really, you just want more free grazing land are you?

AAC Gunks. Don't hesitate. If your pinching pennies you need to buy less cams and stay in a nice campground. The place is awesome and such good company after a day of climbing.

Camping prices in New England are out of whack with the rest of the country. This was one of the most shocking things when I moved here, but at least it makes vacations out west seem more affordable. Most campgrounds in the greater New England area are >$20. The rest of the country its pretty easy to find camping sites for $10 or less.

Don't they charge a couple bucks for a cold shower now anyways? The volume of people (I was just there this weekend) vs the facilities is pretty laughable.

At RRG we stay at Middlefork or Koomer Ridge. $18/night for up to 6 people. Nice enough showers with good warm water. Your own picnic table, fire ring, easy parking.

Out in CO it is either free camping or $10-20 for a night (bathrooms and running water), pretty much dirt cheap.

Well yeah, laughable on memorial day weekend. Show up any other weekend or (especially) a weekday, and I find it to be quite reasonable. Showers were a buck a piece last I checked.

I find most of the hate towards the Miguel's crowds to be from people visiting on holiday weekends, which I haven't found to be at all an accurate representation. I've spent good chunks of time there during various parts of the year and always had plenty of room to camp and opportunities to use the facilities. Except for holiday weekends.

I love the place and think its more than worth the $2

Well yes holiday weekends will always be worse but most people get to climb on weekends, especially holidays.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
