I would guess that a paper envelope that contained nuts would more likely to be ripped than an empty envelope. An empty envelop would have likely arrived intact.
Since the post office showed that the envelope was ripped it seems more likely for them to have contained something to begin with. However, I guess you are right. Either situation is possible. And regardless, he still has some responsibility because the nuts were not received.

For the responses of the seller, I'll hold out judgment on that since we only heard one side of the story.

Fat Dad wrote: I had thought about that, and I think that's the most plausible reason for why they might have been shipped. But the seller could have put something else in kind of bulky (a rock, whatever). It's totally possible he did send the nuts, but then I have a hard time explaining his replies to the buyer (unless the buyer is totally confabulating that). I just find the responses inconsistent with someone who would have mailed them in the first place.
I agree about the response. Then again, there are three sides to every story, right? We have heard one. I would be curious to hear the seller's reply to see if he either calls BS on, or adds color to, anything the buyer has said.

Assuming for argument's sake that the seller's dismissive e-mails are accurate, I doubt you'll hear from him.

In fact, I doubt there'll be any further activity on MP under that screen name, period. Probably just make up a new one and start from scratch.

That's a long time to scam $25.

These are Peenuts, not normal stoppers. They weigh <20g each.

@Crispy - I see where you are coming from and yes, I could tone down on the "scam" wording since it is questionable (as explained in the post, but not in the title).

Its obvious what happened here.. this is a conspiracy beginning at the highest levels of the federal government to stoke distrust between climbers, they obviously see us as a threat to their monopoly on power. Or.. guy shipped it cheap bc he sold them cheap and they didn't make it. Other guy got an attitude and demanded his money back prompting first guy to respond in the way he did. Your welcome.

I was thinking that as well. That's true for an 11x14 (send those all the time so I'm familiar with the costs), but it's possible it could have been one of those little 6x9s, which are cheaper to mail. Yes, quite the mystery...this is like a jury trying to piece together a verdict.

You're talking about 63 g or 2.2 oz worth of stoppers.

Not even a padded envelope?

I guess people can convince themselves it's the buyer that has the attitude, but not even a "split the difference" offer?

Based on those e-mails alone, would never do business w that seller, even if he backtracked and offered to refund the whole $25.

Indeed a scam. Did I ship the nuts? Only I will know. The dude got his money back not sure what's wrong with his panties. If the nuts were worth more I would have shipped with insurance.

Judging by the evidence presented and thorough MP detective work, I'm leaning towards not a scam just a crappy transactions on all accounts with a weirdo seller.

Great afternoon read though.

Is it not the shippers responsibility to make sure he ships product so it will get there?
If I walked into a shop and got a response from jdingleberry like he posted I would spend my money elsewhere. Just because people climb doesn't mean they're not douchebags.

I didn't read where the buyer said he got his money back. Maybe I missed that.

But I didn't miss your dismissive, sarcastic attitude that the buyer said he received from you.

Wait, the dude got his money back because he went through his bank and they deemed that you had scammed him? Or you actually gave him his money back?

Back in 2013, Castleberry took the time to post up about a camera he found and that he ended up returning to the owner. Seems unlikely that that type of dude would also try to scam $25.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
