Best Crampons for approaches in the Bugaboos?
So, I'm going to the Bugs this summer. I would like to get some crampons for the glacier/snow approaches that fit on my hightop midweight hiking boots, or even better onto my approach shoes. |

I use my Grivel G12's on my Raichle hiking boots with no problems. As long as the center-bar is flexible, and they're strap-on, you should have no problem. One warning, though, if your shoes have soft soles, you'll really feel the center bar and/or the front plate of the crampons. After a long hike it feels like you've been walking a tight-rope all day. I had this problem on a pair of pac-boots, the Raichle's were fine. |
But on a serious note... go aluminum if you're a weight weenie and you're willing to spend more money with the tradeoff of reduced durability. Grivel Air Tech Light or BD Neve would both be good choices. |
The Camp XLC 490 worked great for me. |
These will fit in just about any shoe and work well. |
For aluminum crampons, the BD Neve are more durable than the Grivel or Camp models. Also heavier. If you think you will ever cross scree or rock with them, the Neves are recommended. |
Another vote for the CAMP XLC 490s, I've used them many times on approach shoes and they work great. Nice big front points for steep snow. |
So you're planning on approach shoes as well? I've heard it's been a low snow year there. The cols may be icier than usual. |

I used g12s in the bugs last year and was happy with them for this application. |
