Looking for Bouldering Suggestions near Truckee
|
Organizing a Bachelor party for a dear friend, a large group of us are renting a place in Truckee, some of us including the bachelor are planning to get out bouldering for 2-3 days while on the trip, where would folks familiar with the area recommend we aim to visit? Looking for solid concentration of good quality problems, v0-v9ish range, no epic approaches, but willing to hike a bit. |

When are you going to be in Truckee? How far do you care to drive? DL Bliss SP definitely fits the bill but its about a 35-40 min drive down the west shore. Old County in Tahoe City has a pretty high concentration of problems with not much (30 mins) of hiking involved. Tons of stuff on Donner Summit too which is close. Could be snow depending on when you're heading to Truckee. |

Have you thought about holding the bachelor event in Sacramento? The Golden State's capital city boasts the areas premier strip clubs along with a bouldering gym that has problems ranging from V0-V12. |

When are you planning on coming? Castle peak has awesome bouldering but there is likely still a bit of snow up there. Some of the starts of problems are in snow melt puddles until June or July sometimes (i.e. hillbilly hand fishing on the swamp thing boulder). Right in Truckee is Donner Memorial state park and Donner lake, both have some good bouldering that may be climbable now (split rock, tic toc boulder, one I have been wanting to climb is Plate-tech-tonics V4 just on Donner lake). All of this can be found in detail in the Bouldering Lake Tahoe North / West shore Edition by Dave Hatchett (Thanks Dave!) as stated in the above posts. That guidebook is awesome, and will give you tons of stuff to do while you are up there, regardless of when you come. |

Donner Summit is the easiest, 15 mins from town, lots of stuff and easy approaches. |

germsauce wrote:Thanks Guys- I'll check out the guidebook. Definitely hoping for a melt-off. ANy sport climbing w/in an hour or so that's worthy? You never really told us when you're coming up so can't answer what might be good. But Big Chief is dry except for you have to hike up from the 89. |

There's a big highball called Split Rock that is worth a visit if you guys have some pads. It's in Truckee on your way up to the Summit and it's usually pretty sunny. |

coming up in 2 weeks. |

Check out "big chief ". Awesome sport |

Cool ya as long as there hasn't been rain within a day the Chief is your best bet. The FS Road 06 may or may not be opened by then so you might want to check that out before you start the hike up from the 89. |
