Just ordered it! Can't wait for my first trip to the valley this fall!

I was joking about the punchable face. But not about the incessant "wooting". Wish you the best Slogan, but I'll pass and wait for the next one. And your selfie is...well....

When does the app come out?

Erik Sloan · · Yosemite, CA · Joined Dec 2013 · Points: 254

Hi Rich!

It is unlikely that the App will be released in it's full version before the book comes out. You will retrieve your free app(everyone who buys the book gets the app for free, otherwise the app will be approx. $7) by scratching off a sticker on the back inside cover of the book, and putting that in at the App store.

We're hoping to have a beta version done by mid-May, which I will send to all the people who preorder, but this is my first app so that date might be wishful thinking on my part.

Thanks for the preorders!

Does the app have all the routes that the guidebook has and does it work offline?
Erik Sloan · · Yosemite, CA · Joined Dec 2013 · Points: 254

Thank you for your questions about the app.

The App is being created by the Italian company Vertical Life, which has several apps to European climbing areas already.

For sure the app will work offline.

I hope to have more cliffs in the app than in the book - as there are tons of cliffs that just have a handful or two of climbs so hard to justify a few more pages in the book. That said, I am not making the app so cannot guarantee that every route that is in the book will be in the app - that is the goal at least. I'm still waiting to see the beta version of the app myself, so will keep you posted.

I'm very grateful for Vertical Life's business model that allows all guidebook buyers to get a free app - I think this is really going to be the way to keep this guidebook updated all the time. There are so many new routes being put up here, and routes being changed, that this will be an awesome resource that you will not have to pay extra for that will afford you the best beta.

So in summary, yes I believe the app will have everything and more than the book, eventually, but cannot guarantee it will start out like that.

Thank you for the preorders gang! Woot! E

Yo Gang! Thank you for the preorders.

Folks keep asking about new climbs that are featured in this book. I think one of the best, multi-pitch winter / spring / late fall routes is Super Slacker Highway at Pat and Jack. Check out the topo and pic

Ha! Locker is the coolest. Please send Slogan a customized puffy t shirt. I will leave the "Sloganing", to you.

Retrobolter selfie Slogan, does seem fitting, somehow.

Wait! The Deplorable Mr. Slogan.

Yo Gang,

Thank you for your interest and preorders. Really, really appreciate you all spreading the word about this new book.

Some questions have been coming up:

1. Can you sign my book? I'm not able to sign or write special notes inside the book for folks who participate in the preorder offer. I'm sorry - it is going to be very hectic picking up the books and getting so many shipped out, but I would be happy to sign your book if you come to Yosemite.

2. Questions about the App?: Vertical Life is making the app, so it is not up to me when it is finished. Those guys are the app pros so I'm sure it will come out great. We're hoping to get the app ready before June, but no guarantees.

People are like 'how do I get my app?' - On the inside cover of the book is a Vertical Life sticker, with instructions. Basically you just scratch off the sticker to get a code, which you put in at the app store and you get the app for free.

3. What is Local Pickup? - I'm a super environmentally minded person, so if someone wants to pick their book up in Yosemite that can totally work - BUT remember that I don't have a house in the middle of the Valley, and you would just be meeting me before or after work, maybe at the El Cap meadow, and that that might mean that you don't get your book as fast as if you had it shipped to your house. I'm super psyched that folks want to pick up books when they're up in the park, but also want to be clear that this is a super informal process.

Thanks for the preorders gang!

It has been awesome to meet many of you here in Yosemite the last weeks. This is a special time of year, for sure, and this year with the waterfalls raging it has really been spectacular.

Still getting a fair number of shipping questions:

1. Why no international shipping with the 25% off discount? Because I ship so few books internationally, it is expensive to do so. I end up just going to the post office, where I have to fill out customs forms, and it costs $30/book for shipping that can take up to 4 weeks. I know, lame ;(. So this time I'm just letting Cordee International, a great book distributor from the UK, handle all the international orders. Sorry about that. When you or your friends come to YOsemite have them pick you up a book or two!

2. $6 vs $8 priority shipping? Our standard shipping is USPS Media Mail, which is the most cost effective but can take up to 8 days. So this time I am also offering an expedited option, $8 for USPS Priority Mail, which is guaranteed in 2-3 days.

I'm sorry, I'm not offering UPS or Fedex shipping with the preorder option.

Please continue to spread the word about this preorder offer gang! It makes our life so much easier if we can just ship the books to you instead of getting them in a store near you.

Yosemite is looking amazing. Go For It! Woot!

It was cool to see the new 2016 version of the Tucson guidebook, Squeezing the Lemon, here on MP. I went to college in Tucson, and that book rocked back then, haha.

If anyone else knows someone who wrote a guidebook last year or this year, tell them to enter it in the Banff Mountain Film Fest Guidebook competition:

banffcentre.ca/banff-mounta…

Gotta say, Jerry Handren's Red Rock Guide is gonna be hard to beat this year. Wow that book looks great!

Yo Gang!

Thanks for interest and preorders. There has been a similar thread on ST, which brought out a pretty crazy story about a climber being eaten by a bear a few years back at the base of Absolutely Free. Here's the link:

Get on this preorder - 25% only last a few more days!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
