Here's another research on climbing, support her by contributing to her Master's in applied research (you may need to take out your YDS/Brit equivalency table):

Research Project into Climbing Motivations
Hi there, I am a masters student in the UK researching motivational factors in rock climbing. If you have any experience climbing it would be a great help to my research if you could complete my online survey. It typically takes under 10 minutes to complete.

How do you think the insurance companies gather data ?
Why do they bother?
What makes a person be denied coverage after paying into a health care system?

When an activity is brought to the attention of said companies through a growing trend,
That is - more of you folk telling the Dr's at the emergency room that climbing was
The mode of injury,
they write it into the report.

After forty or fifty payouts
someone sees the stats. And points to the actuarial tables, and puts in a new category to cover the activity that the company is now newly paying claims for/ of.

saying :

"we need to add that"
"In order to discount that activity and refuse to pay on any climbing related injuries"

Hahaha,T Roper that is too funny, yeah if your trying to get to spread the genetically questionable material, you have to drop your genes, " procreation, go for it! "
Hey that will make almost as good a route name as "Try Turrets, Girl" or TTG, which when you use the alternate start is the highly offensive,( to some ) Turrets Girl......

but....

as I've gotten refusal of coverage letters from medical insurance that I've been paying into,
I think that what is going on in these requests is having dire consequences....

As I have said, in a PM, to LUC,:
I see that you are - all in - on providing data to anonymous sources.
It is my opinion based on denial of coverage,
That the instant.Co.'s are actively,
Building stats that will and are being used to refuse to pay ANY PORTION of any medical claim
related to climbing and its auxiliary pursuits.
Think about it. As a voice on the forum you are doing a great disservice to all climbers in the USA
By recommending that climbers blindly answer
Surveys you are facilitating the denial of coverage due to a activity that is not specifically ( yet ) a non insurable activity.
I'm not impressed by the dearth of valuable information that is now the septic tank ,
Snark could be my middle name, sorry if it wrangles your short hairs.
But I think it needs to be pointed out that the only way to now get medical coverage, is to have to step into the catch 22 of not admitting to high risk activities, while paying for extra coverage to cover participation in high risk activities .

I hate my tablet, it has a faulty spellcheck /auto-correct , that I then miss edit, and the mistakes
Seen above are the result, sorry that it makes it a hard read and some times incoherent.

Yeah Michael, good point. I was once refused coverage BITD for being honest on my questionnaire from the insurance company about the amount of beer I consumed. If only they had known it was 3.2%...

ah, the joy of the American health insurance gouging industry, preferring to pay more in legal fees than coverage to avoid setting precedence of willingness to actually provide the service they charge you for.
Surveys already exists, you can probably get a whole lot more information through the AAC, Access Fund, National Parks,Outdoor gear associations.
"The man" already knows that people climb, heck, after the dawn wall, tons of clueless Americans have discovered climbing (Wait until they do a sequel or remake of Cliffhanger!)

I make it a point to verify the limitations to my coverage when insured through an employer and also get supplemental travel insurance when going to the states. It costs me $60 USD/year for as many month long trips as I want to the US, and this insurance company is directly referred to by our local climbing associations.

Shop around, does the AAC suggest any insurance companies?
Actually, they do

The Why Do You Climb thread from last fall was way better than this one. Why ruin an interesting question with that survey?

Don't know if you meant myself or op, but I think the problem is that she is mixing up benefits of climbing with motivations. Why most of us climb is probably not primarily for any of the fringe benefits she listed. And she didn't mention spandex once.

I'm going to have to dig up some old "Spandex Shots" to make things right.
