Hello Everyone,

I'm in need of some advice, I am taking the month of August off and would love to spend the whole time camping/climbing as much as possible.

I am primarily looking for places outside of North America. However, many major climbing areas are just too dang hot to climb that month (40C spain).

If you have any ideas on what places offer great summertime climbing let me know. I'm a 12 sport and 10 trad climber and love both styles, not much of a boulderer.

I'm thinking some places in Norway and there is a huge cave in Bulgaria that just looks epic.

Any advice or input would be great! If you want to share American/Canadian crags please do so as well.

Australia - the Arapiles or the Grampians?

Northern US, and especially Canada, should be reasonable, too. Squamish, Bow Valley, Skaha are all likely reasonable that time of year.

The 'Dacks in northern New York, too.

Just chiming in because you mentioned Bulgaria. I haven't climbed there, but did spend two years living there. Incredible place, incredible culture, totally worth a visit, and the climbing looks ridiculous. August will likely be fairly warm - not Spain warm, but probably high 80s or so on many days. I'd say go for it though - it's on my short list to go back and climb.

Derek... if I had one month and the $$$ to go to Europe.

#1 Dresden .... the birth place of rock climbing, the local boys were pulling 5.10 in 1850!!!, and just up the road a bit is the stuff in Czech Republic.
#2 Frankenjura.... the gem of German Rockclimbing.

These two places are not to far apart and Germany in August is the best time of year for good weather.

Have fun, im waiting on Retirement to do that summer trip.

Out of that list, one doesn't belong: Skaha is damned hot in August, even if you follow the shade and take a siesta mid-day. 40C+ is not at all unusual.

Places I'd consider in your situation:

Europe:

- Climbing granite above the arctic circle in Llofoten (Norway)
- Many, many other places in Norway.
- Granite crags around Gothenburg (Sweden)
- Alpine rock in the Dolomites
- Alpine climbing in Chamonix
- A mix of cragging and alpine routes in the Durrance Valley, France
- A lot of the main "summer" sport areas in Europe (Ceuse, Frankenjura, etc) will be kind of hot, and quite crowded, in August. But still an option.

North America:
- Squamish offers every type of climbing you could possibly want, and is nice in August
- Sport climb in Canmore
- Bugaboos ('nuff said)
- Expedition to the Cirque of the Unclimbables
- Hire a mule team to haul a month of supplies deep into the Wind River Range, and put up new routes on alpine granite
- Climb alpine granite in the High Sierra and/or the Cascades
- Be a lazy sport climber at Rifle, Maple, or Tensleep

Southern Hemisphere:
- Bouldering in Rocklands
- Is it too cold/wet in Arapiles then?

Durance Valley:

klimbingkorns.de/climbing-i…

Could easily be linked up with a visit to Ceuse or Chamonix, depending on your preferences.

Jesus guy, have you ever climbed Elbe sandstone? In august? Think hotter than hades, kitty litter sandstone, crap pro, & no chalk allowed. Beautiful though. Franken is great if you like short, steep pockets (which I think are great).

the schmuk ..... is it really that bad? I lived in Germany when it was East and West. I was not allowed to go to the east cause my dad was a pretty hi-ranking officer. I lived in Stuttgart and I don't really recall HOT ass weather ever, except for 3-4 day heat waves, and then for a Californian like me it didn't seem HOT.

I do know that the Beer Drinking is year round, with hawt German women in costume who let it all hang out.

When is the season, for Dresden?

These threads are really made for dreaming, don't you think???

It can be that bad, but also kind of awesome :-). September would be good. I only climbed on the Czech side though. Most Czechs climb in franken btw.

I sit corrected.

Thank you for all the information everyone! I'm going to continue researching as I have a couple months left to decide.

Looks like a lot of people have some great trips/ideas!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
