Attempt Instead of Tick

So I am somebody who loves numbers and stats and who compulsively ticks their climbs on Mountain Project and likes to know how many routes I do in a year, month, session, etc.

What I would like to see is an addition to the tick feature is something where you can "tick" - or make note of a climb that you either got up but fell (hang dogged) or didn't finish. The reason why I would like to see this is because I feel that it would make it easier to track my progress. For example it would be cool to see that on March 5th I had to bail off my project on the 5th bolt, but March 15th I clipped the chains but with 2 falls, and then I sent on April 2nd. For my own purposes I tick climbs that I got to the chains (or topped out a boulder) even if I fell and then I make a note in the comments about how many falls if any. Especially for bouldering days I might go out and work 5 different problems and send 1 or maybe nothing. I think it would be cool to be able to see how many climbs I'm attempting.

Would this be useful for anybody else?

I know there is now an option for "fell/hung" in the new tick-list which is awesome. I'm wondering about a feature where you didn't get to the top and still want to mark that you tried it and how far you got.

I would also like something like this but how would it affect the tick breakdown? Would we get extra pitches counted even though we only did say for instance a quarter of the route?

Personally, I don't like to see the page cluttered with hangdog attempts. It's even worse when those users suggest a grade after climbing bolt to bolt. I think an offline word doc or spreadsheet is the way to keep a personal record, with actual sends being recorded here. Part of this I realize is personal preference, but part of it is being able to fairly judge the ability of a potential new partner here. A user can come across as a 13 climber if they record all attempts, but may only be sending a number grade lower at best. I just prefer an honest tick list. That being said, if there was a way to filter, that could alleviate the problem.

You can just use the comments box for that. Just mark it as "fell/hung", and then in the comments you can put "bailed at the 4th bolt after 37 falls" or something like that. I, like you, like to record all the climbs I do, but I make sure to put a note in each one to clarify what style I climbed it in.

Yeah. It's an honor's system, at best. For all you know, people could be ticking climbs they didn't even touch...I wouldn't use it as a metric for evaluating future partners (particularly because somebody could be a strong climber but terrible belayer, which does happen). Ultimately, I say use it as it works for you and don't worry about how other people use the site.

I'd like something like this as well. I only use MP to track my progress, so there are several climbing trips that MP doesn't count as days climbing because I have no ticks from those days. An "attempt" option doesn't add much clutter, and it might actually give a more realistic picture of the climbers who use it. For instance, if I have a bunch of ticks and no attempts from my last several climbing trips, that's a nice visual cue for me to try something harder next time out; I'm not pushing myself hard enough.

I have a [probably over the top] Microsoft Access/Excel tracking and plotting system. It allows for tracking of OS, Flash, Redpoint, Send/Falls, TR, and Repeat. PM me if you're interested.

Note: Microsoft got rid of charting capability within Access in version 2016. However, it does allow data links to Excel, which does a much nicer job of plotting. Access still excels at housing the data and setting up queries.

+1 for Charlie's tracking system. I downloaded it from another forum a year or so ago and it's super impressive, and totally nerdy. Trust me, I'm probably just as analytical in my tracking as anyone, but I just don't see value in recording attempts in a public forum. I also put a lot of stock into offering (and reviewing others') realistic suggestions on grades, and I firmly believe that no grade suggestions should be made until a route is sent. You never know until the deed is done.

Yeah, I guess I'm bummed if I go on a trip and send nothing (and therefore don't get to tick any routes), but I guess that's more motivating for me to try harder next time and/or reassess my goal planning process! You can use a spreadsheet like Charlie's and be as analytical as you like while maintaining a "cleaner" online database. Likely a pipe dream, but my $0.02.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
