Ahoy, Mtn. Proj. Peeps:

I'm usually over on Supertopo. Posting here to help keep up the pressure to save Oak Flat in central Arizona.

Below is a link to the Access Fund page for activism to save Oak Flat--a fantastic area for bouldering, sport, trad, camping, wildlife, and native Apache rituals. We've GOT to drive a stake in the heart of this freakin' copper mine! Tell the Arizona National Forest supervisor to protect this irreplaceable resource! Sign the petition and pass it on. This area is so special. Let's not turn it into a slag heap!

This area is amazingly beautiful, and has some of the best climbing near Phoenix. I hope we can save it!

This alone is reason enough to vote for him.

According to Outside Magazine(1), this could be the largest loss of climbing access in US history. The purported jobs our representatives say it creates are based on the first two year, with most being automated within a short time after. the amount of income that the area experiences from outdoor recreation create more jobs than the proposed mine and may even have a larger contribution to the Arizona economy (Economic impact at a climbing area in Kentucky is estimated at $3.6 Billion per year (2)).
Do we really want to start shipping a precious natural resource such as copper to a company that is foreign held? There are many other options of where to mine, without devastating an incredible natural, outdoor recreation and cultural resource.
Read 'Boom, Bust, Boom' by Bill Carter (3) for an excellent survey of the copper industry in the world.

Thanks for posting this, BAd.

In case you are not familiar with the backstory, here is how Senator John McCain got this proposal to where it is today after failing to pass it with a legitimate vote:

"In December 2014, McCain tried a different tactic: During back-room negotiations, he buried the deal deep inside a 1,600-page, $500 billion “must pass” bill funding the United States military. The bill was then introduced under a special agreement that prohibited amendments. It passed with the land swap included".

Wish I would have copied my letter for posting here. Done. Guess I should prioritize a vacation here before citizen rights get trumped again. Bernie all the way, lest they sell off where I play!
