Given that hardcore history was shot down, this might be as well. But Waterloo: The History of Four Days, Three Armies and Three Battles by Bernard Cornwell is the most interesting story I've read/heard in ages

I love all the pop culture phenoms. If you haven't yet, try girl with the dragon tattoo and the following two books. Da Vinci code series was good. Gone Girl was cool. The Martian was great!

Also, Michael Crichton writes awesome stuff. Jurrassic Park is my fave.
