Fellow Sharp End Dabling Fellows,

I am heading through southern MT and into Utah/SLC area to ski, bringing tools and the basic personal gear; looking to get some beta on what ice is in and a fun solo (WI 2-3+) or who is looking to rope up for a few long ones or some laps. Also game for lower elevation rock and willing to travel/carpool...

No real ice in. I would bank on skiing and climbing down low in lcc & bcc. The skiing and climbing have been great latily.

Howdy, Dave! Maybe put a specific date range you're looking at in the title? If you are headed through Idaho on the way to SLC, City of Rocks is in full swing now, and, with the weather we're having lately, there should be plenty of folks to partner with. We are having close to record highs, and more coming! SLC and Boise both probably have a sudden wave of sick leave calls. :-)

And snowpacks have been great this year, new falling very recently.

Maybe not quite "full swing" yet.

From the City of Rocks Facebook page:
Current Conditions: Sunny, with a high near 53. North northeast wind 3 to 8 mph. Tonight mostly clear, with a low around 34.
Roads are clear and mostly dry, 2WD to Bath Rock. Beyond Bath Rock to Emery muddy but drivable with 2WD. Twin Sister to Juniper junction is muddy with standing water in places, 4WD recommended.
Campsites 5-43 are accessible to camping.

Ice is done (although there may still be some flows in obscure protected areas waiting to fall off). Today will be in the low 50's at 8500', as it was yesterday.

Regarding skiing, almost all resorts are closing in the next couple of weeks. After April 17, only Snowbird will be left* (with no skiing in the Peruvian Gulch section and the Tram will be down from 18 Apr - mid/late May). Snowbird typically goes to a Friday-Sunday only schedule after the first or second weekend in May.

  • : Alta reopens for a final 3-day weekend April 22-24.

If you are into backcountry skiing, make sure your avi skills are solid.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
