Well, I realize that most gyms today are built on metal frames, but early climbing gym had wooden frame and people still lead on them.

What were some methods used to place hanger on wooden frames?

I know some of those gyms have held up quite well over the years.

I found this on the rocklimbing forums:

"I am in charge of wall checks and safety at rockn and jamn in colorado. What we do is drill a hole threw the wall so a bolt (the same ones you use to put the holds on the wall) can fit threw. Then cut a peice of wood 3/4 inch thick in a 6 in by 6 in square. From the outside thread the bolt threw the hanger, wall, wood peice and another hanger with a locknut on the end. Then from the first bolt threw all bolts to the end atach a steel cable swadged on the first and last hanger on the inside of the wall. our engineer did this and we have never had a problem."

Personally I wouldn't recommend it, but there are definitely people doing it.

Note to self: Don't climb at this place. Grammar doesn't dictate climbing ability but to be in charge of safety at a commercial gym I have higher expectations.

I also wouldn't recommend the plywood taking the brunt of the force.

Exactly.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
