New Scarpa Phantom Tech Ice Boots?

I'm with Jon, -10F gets a 6000. But Dave and I used the Rebel Ultra and way way colder than that in the wind and shade @ 12K ft. mid winter and did fine. We both kept checking on each other during the day to see who got cold feet first. We kept climbing and it never happened.

Key there is we kept climbing. If we'd had to do more than belay on quick pitches we'd have been fooked.

cold, windy day on the Midi

Frankly I'd rather had a 6000 on and not had to worry about it. But a Phantom Tech would have served the same purpose that day....warm enough feet and no worry.

Per Dead Bird boot, Lowa Latok is 950g per boot, $70 cheaper, and been around for a while. How are the Arcteryx so hyped? Sick tread pattern though.

Is the new Scarpa a 5000m boot too? It looks slick, but I get a Lowa pro deal.

These feel a bit more snug than the Phantom guides...should have gone with a 45.5 but Ill make these work.

I am getting a pair to review, how should I size it? Are they true to size with a single mountaineering sock? I am a 13 so I would get a 47.

They are close but I was a pretty comfortable 45 in the old Phantom Guides...these I think I could have gone a half size up but your mileage may vary.;)

Im just going to pull the superfeet out, go with the stock insole and use a lighter sock and I am sure Ill be good to go. Walking around in them with a heavy sock today with the super feet to pack them out just a bit. Not too concerned.I wonder if Dane has any insight on fit?

I can live without my super feet. I would want to use my smartwool mountaineering socks. I want a do all of fits. mountaineering and climbing. Without a stock insert the boot is pretty true to size? Where was it snug for you?

Pretty true to size with the stock inserts. Still felt a bit snug but it could just need some packing out.

On the question of weight? 135g = 4.76oz per boot size 42. Bigger the boot the more weight saved.

For the additional weight difference of a Latok I could easily be in a full double boot.

Grammy, I don't use any additional insoles and don't have the Guide to compare. My sock combo is pretty light, liner and a mid weight so not much sock. But they are a little bigger in the toe box than my older Phantom Ultras. For my skinny feet I think they are true to size for Scarpa in a 45. As you've suggested I'd bet your Phantom's insulation was packed out a bit from use. I'd expect these to do the same with a little time on them. My Ultras did enough to notice the difference.

So I am okay to order these in my true size 13/47 and be fine in terms of toe jamming etc? Or did you guys size up compared to your true size.

I ordered true to size. Also, I use a 41 in the guides, and bought 41 in the Techs. fit great for my foot.

Been out four times with these boots! Some notes

1.) spiral zip is a bit gimmicky IMHO. Somewhat of a PITA to zip and unzip particularly with gloves but is a solid seal when zipped and appears to be excellent quality. No lube in my box either.

2.) fit is great and the weight is unbelievable. These are like climbing in slippers. I was worried about the new materials on the soles and felt that the lack of aggressive lugs would be an issue hiking in on snow, ice and rock but so far my fears have been unwarranted. These are comfortable hikers, a bit stiffer than the guides but nice boot break and flexion where you need it.

3.) better toe welt! this new wider design will accept any and all crampons equally well from my stingers, to my petzl sarkens to my Grivel g20's and Rambo comps!! Thank you Scarpa!! toe bails are no longer a concern!

4.) warmth feels about the same as the guides. I've not noticed a huge difference but then again,. the Northeast saw record high temperatures throughout the winter so it was tough to gauge fairly.

5.) big fan of the new lacing system. Laces stay put and gone are the days of the laces slipping off the top lace hooks. The new nylon lace lock system works flawlessly and secures the laces while you tie your knot.

6.) The sewn in tongue is something I am getting used to and almost miss the free floating tongue when it comes to putting on and taking off the boots. There is more of a sock like fit now which will in turn keep warmth in and moisture/snow/water out but it does interfere with the ease of entry and removal.

7.) they climb like a dream!!

Hey Chris, you think the Tech Ice could replace Scarpa Rebels and Phantom Guides as a quiver of one? Can you snap a pic of the toe welt? Remember the struggling regarding the Cassin Bladerunner's fit to my boots.

-My Rebel Ultras (with the integrated gaiters) weigh 752g/boot and my Phantom Techs weigh 880g/boot, both in size 43. So the Ultras are still significantly lighter, and therefore I'd still wear them on warm days when I'm gonna be climbing steep mixed routes. That said, the Techs climb amazingly well, and are much warmer than the Rebels, so if you're only gonna buy one pair, my vote would be Techs.

-Here are a few photos of the Blade Runner crampons on the Phantom Techs. With my size 43 boot, I use the larger (size 2) crampon, but the adjusting bar is at the third smallest hole. I also moved the toe bail to the front of the three holes, to shorten the front points.

That helps a lot Scott, thanks!

I'm thinking of selling my Guides now just on the fact the Techs fit Bladerunners better.

Scott beat me to it but I think the techs are a great alternative Bill. Loving mine but they are on the shelf now... Time for the sticky rubber!!!
