Monday morning.

It sounds like Provo Canyon is falling apart. Is it basically all gone or are there still lingering lines to climb?

Sounds like conditions are grim. Is there any ice/ recommendations for next couple days? Here from Mass for first time until Tuesday 2/23. Anything will do. Heard "Joe's Canyon"?, Aespen Grove"? Hopeful!

Hidden Haven has good ice
Joes valley should be good it sits pretty high
Maple in the shade might have some good stuff still

Checked out hidden haven on Thursday and the first pitch was done for.

The ice in MT is really good....

^ haha, i guess if you're from UT. the ice in MT is deteriorating very quickly. just like everywhere. Colorado too. It's mixed climbing season.

We climbed hidden haven Tuesday and it was fine that was in the afternoon. There is an easy mixed line 5.6 maybe 2 bolts can be supplemented with small gear if need be to get over the first pitch if there is no ice. I think I would check it out still

It's time to climb rocks or go to CO, MT or Can for spring conditions. The ice here is pretty much gone or unsafe to climb.

At the last Salt Lake Climbers Alliance Policy meeting some items were brought to our attention by Salt Lake City Public Utilities regarding recent festive events on the Great White Icicle. I was asked to post up a few gentle reminders as though we all want to have fun, sometimes we, myself included forget how our fun can have an impact.

As most know the Cottonwood Canyons are designated watershed. As such dogs are not allowed. But at the same time swimming and creating a spot to soak in a stream is not allowed. Dumping bath water or even water from say a wood fired hot tub back into the watershed is not allowed.

Sometimes the rules do not make complete sense, but they are what the are. For instance, you can take your kayak out into the water at Mtn. Dell which is also watershed but you can not do roll practice cause your head and torso will be immersed.

At the same time the Cottonwood Canyons are designated watershed they are also part of the National Forest. Which also has a few guidelines as well. The Forest really frowns upon diversion of water even if the water is diverted 50 feet away and stays in the same drainage. And while the Forest does encourage people to use the Forest sometimes too many at one event can be of concern.

All that said, folks climbing at the GWI this year did a great job of respecting the private property and parked down canyon and off the white line. Canyon Patrols were pretty active in the upper parts of the canyon. I saw lots of people getting tickets both at the resorts and areas like Spruces.

Overall the SLCA has a very good working relationship with the City, the Forest, and landowners. So conversations can easily be had when reminders are needed (not everything mentioned above was brought up but we thought a good time for some general reminders).

And once the snow melts there will be a clean up on the south side of the canyon. Much of it will be focused around the old pavilion which is a graffiti magnet. So look for some info in a month or so.

There's a lot of misunderstanding about the rationale of these kind of watershed regulations. They're not arbitrary nor is the reason to "control people" (whatever that means, but it's something I've heard from time to time). The whole point of keeping dogs out of the watershed and humans out of the water is to prevent contamination of the water supply with microorganisms of public health significance, which we and dogs carry around with us in large quantities and are not removed/killed during the water treatment process.

Um that makes no sense. The watershed is already contaminated. With a permanent population of humans, dogs, large ungulates as well a 5 to 10 thousand human visits a day there is no shortage of contaminates in the water. In addition I find it hard to believe that the municipal water system can't remove or kill everything from the water supply and make it safe for humans. Hell I can use a hand pump and render any piss puddle drinkable for $75
I think it's more a question of load on the system. The restrictions just make it easier and less expensive to get the water ready for table service.
