"Negro: definition of Negro in Oxford dictionary (British & World English)". Oxforddictionaries.com. Retrieved 2014-05-11. But again, my stance on this is that I as a white man have no right to judge whether a word used to classify a minority or its use is offensive. However, the racists in this thread offend me greatly.
Sorry Chris, that doesn't count. It's only the most commonly used dictionary in the world. Can you show me an actual example? You're offended?! Sorry that's YOUR problem. This is a National Park and I can name prominent monoliths to offend whomever I choose. Those names as some have interjected, are comparable to "literature" and "art". Deal with it, stop whining, get a life. Why am I defending this? Oh, I'm in denial (not Denali...which used to be Mt. McKinely, but was renamed, you know, becuz some damn people were offended (wait, that DOESN'T COUNT!!). Seriously, I'm so over this "PC"...when did everyone get so "PC"? Was it the 1960's? C'mon, give us another 20 years until us old school guys are too senile to care.

This doesn't count:

Back in the 80s when Frank climbed in the Gunks he really looked up to Lynn Hill. Literally.

I climbed a boulder problem at Kraft called the Black Bitch. So I guess NG is pretty PC after all.

Well said. I think we have another route name in here somewhere: "what a bunch of p..." or "it's a f.. rock climb" (love the irony). Dare I say another literary masterpiece as some here have pointed out.

As an adirondack climber I've decided to start a movement to have the black fly renamed the Negro fly
Who's with me?

So much time and angst over one word in a route name taken from a song, and yet that same song with the offending word still gets played around the country and across the globe unabated and uncensored, or unrewritten and unresung. WTF, Owen??? That song should be far more offensive to you than the mere appearance of one of its words in a route name, and yet you do nothing about that much bigger travesty. Its trashy racist overtone has littered our airwaves for more than twenty years. If this were spray painted on a wall it could literally be considered a hate crime. Get on it, Owen!!! Write letters to radio stations to demand them to stop playing that racist trash, and to Lou Reed family and foundations to implore them to have that song corrected. Tell them how it's polluting not just adult minds, but also corrupting teenagers in formative years who might be listening to it while getting high and making out.

At this stage, this thread is more about raising everyone's awareness that the use of "Negro" and "Faggot" might be offensive.

It is no longer about Owen's effort to change the name of the route "Negro Girls" (or now "Colored Girls").

I could certainly point out dozens of them. That'd be stupid on my part though because the people that posted them don't think they're racists. It would further degrade the argument.

I've been very careful not to call out specific individuals here, and I will continue to refrain form doing so.

I will say this:

If you think you're not racist, and you don't think that racism is a huge problem in this country, you're wrong (about both).

Now there's an interesting point, especially about not thinking you're a racist. We can't escape our history. My parents were incredibly racist and while I strive to escape the shackles of my history, I understand that those thoughts and ideas from childhood still creep around in the back of my mind. I have to remind myself not to fall prey to those ideas. I know that sometimes I'll catch myself just thinking about something in a certain way and say to myself "Whoa there Frank. What the fuck are you thinking?" Is racism still in me? Probably to some degree but I try to ferret it out and be honest about it.

If you pay attention to the big old planet we live on you'll see that most species are racial segregationists and major haters. We humans are pretty inclusive when it comes to mammals.

I think his points are valid. Are you so rigid that you can't step back and look at what he's saying, are you so convinced that you're not racist that entertaining the thought is out of the question? Or maybe you are racist and you're fine with that. Looking at your comments makes me wonder.

Sorry, but I'm not seeing what point he's making. He's said there's a bunch of racists posting here, but declines to say what comments lead him to this conclusion. Not very convincing to me...

Is this an accurate representation of what we're talking about?
This doesn't count either?

I don't see how that applies here. We're talking about something that was done years ago when, perhaps the term was not as offensive as it is now. And the guy you're putting up there is assigning something, I don't know what, to the woman's race. It was like saying "You people..." I don't see that going on here. The guy is obviously a dim wit anyway and she over-reacted. She could easily informed him that the term isn't valid and that she finds it offensive. She missed an opportunity to educate. Instead she chose the drama queen pose.

Your selective use of quotes is inspiring. Let me give that a try. After all, it's fun to take all the substance out of what people are trying to say and just leave something you can fixate on.
