You can't tell a latino from an Asian? Now I'm offended!

Thanks to all who posted, I am stoked at this dialogue and respect all who contribute their thoughts. Sorry if I chaffed anyone making a point, but as a fellow climber I do respect you even if we don't agree on everything. I think climbers are the best people on earth because they "get it"...nature, enduring pain to accomplish a goal, and exploration, and...BEER!)))
Now you done it! My friends that I climb with who belong to AA are offended by any route name that references alcoholic beverages. Those thousands of route names need to be changed as well.

What about the ones that suggest violence to animals? For example, there's Stackable Livestock in Skaha.....

Absolutely! Spank the Monkey, well that's just not acceptable I say.

From now on it's just route 1, route 2, etc. Hopefully this doesn't offend numerologists.

The same people who are offended by this are the same people who turned our schools into participation trophy factories. Who dare somebody be offended or have their feelings hurt.

You all need to grow up.

Between this thread and the closure of Mt Baldy to protect the public from itself I'd say we are The Greatest Generation of Pussies.

Ask a philosophy prof, 'climbing ethics' is non-statement. Ethics relates big moral issues that affect society. 'climber ethics' is a minuscule and silly level of first-worldness of how a user group that already thrashes the rock selectively chooses insignificant impacts to try to morally justify the larger impact. If you really need to name a line on a rock something sexist, racist or some other classless Trump-voter level name, fine, but don't expect those of us that aren't toothless confederate flag hillbillies to want to be associated with your kind.
This aint my generation. My generation has it's own problems. I would never and have never named one of my routes anything offensive, Dancing in The Storm, Wedding March, World Beater, The Shaman etc.... all pretty harmless but I don't wee my pants when i open a guidebook and see a route named something offensive or raunchy.

I usually have trouble writing personal descriptions of myself. But I can recognize myself in the comments of another:

I've only named one route: "Once in a Blue Moon" - although it had likely been climbed before.

The formation is huge and has a bunch of other multi-pitch routes listed in the old guide with names like Route 1, Route 2, etc. Ugh.

Blue Moon? What the fuck is wrong with you? Do you have any idea how offensive that is to astronomers? Forget about astrologists! What a fucking asshole.

OT but having spent almost two decades at the south end of NZ...

I saw nothing of a plague of racism, racial violence or huge institutional prejudices.

It's a good place, with good people.

Actually, I do. And it has already been changed back to originally designated name. "Colored Girls." Part of the Walk on the Wild Side theme.

White Punks on Rope.

Totally racist... I demand change and 8 pages of interweb drivel.

Shit. Does that mean that we need to start a new thread to debate this new/old name?

("Colored" is even more antiquated than "Negro". But the naming choices still rests on the FAs and authors. If that was the original name, it makes sense to keep it.)
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
