Oh, and we could also not climb that route.

You couldn't, even if the intent was racist, put that aside and enjoy the formation? I'm a pretty liberal guy, but weeping over something like this for "day/month and every subsequent thought" sounds self absorbed. As for changing route names, I actually asked Mike about changing the name of Greaseballs and Junglebunnies and he flatly refused. He feels like we were having fun at our own expense and it was a good time in our lives. And I'm not the black guy.
Frank, some climbers here, so impassioned by their own personal climbing "ethics" will (after loudly professing online) go out to the climbs in question with a crowbar and physically break off bolts that the FA approved. They are not just changing words, they are breaking away the actual rock itself. Now THAT is "self absorbed". They are also in effect putting a veto on the FA.

Frank, where is this climb you keep mentioning Greaseballs & JB? I can't seem to find it listed ANYWHERE on this website or...anywhere.

I'm not sure what that has to do with the current topic. But there are many ways to be self-absorbed. Can't say I'm immune to it all the time myself. If I hadn't explained the reason for our route names, you would be equally affronted. Maybe you still are. But the intentions were light hearted. And they were also done at a time when PC wasn't taken quite so seriously.

Send me a link to this climb you keep professing, Greaseballs & JB. Is it listed here on MP? Your whole argument seems to rest on the name of the climb, yet it's not listed on any climbing sites?

The route is in Lost City in the Gunks, ergo no info posting due to tradition. And does it really matter where it is, how hard or how good? That's not what the post is about. If you're questioning if the routes exist, John Strand commented on one earlier.

You guys give rednecks a bad name. And how the fuck is a half Japanese dude a redneck anyway?

Haha, ok, maybe the yellow tint makes me an Orangeneck. But Sid is definitely all Redneck.

You have no idea the route names I've come up with that were nixed as being too offensive to somebody. lol

People need to lighten up. Being PC perpetuates racism. By being delicate around somebodies race/religion/ethnicity you are entrenching the division. Division is broken down by being upfront about things.

New Zealand is a multicultural place. They're happy to laugh at differences and all be friends too. Bro'town is a mainstream TV show over there. Words like whitey, blacky, curry-muncher are used...

Is no one is going to touch on the problematic word girls?

By referring to girls it's clearly ageist. By repeating the theme of youthfulness this and other route names helps contribute to a culture in climbing that prizes youth and creates a hostile and oppressive environment for older climbers. It is also sexist and misogynistic, as it perpetuates the idea that women are objects of which men then aim to claim victory over.

I don't take that view, but I can think of some who would.

Funny - I've been thinking for a while now that, if asked, I would have said my general "hot button" is offensive material about girls / women ... something I suspect has something to do with having grown up with just a Mom and five sisters.

... not that I'm pure ...

Peace.
