Idea for improving MP

Norman, not to bust chops, but you trad lead 5.10d and you are worried about this? Makes no sense. I can't trad lead 5.10d and I've travelled all over and your suggestion for improvement seems silly for someone at your grade. A newbie 5.5 leader, maybe, but what an odd request. I'll climb all over the western US this summer and have no use for such an improvement. (to say nothing of the fact that part of the adventure is the unknown...)

I see what you mean there.
I guess I was thinking that presently, Most folks just say: "Gear to 3" or whatever, which similarly translates to whatever.
Seems pretty complicated and beta intensive, and I doubt I'd use it, but maybe some folks would.

There is over a 100 different areas in the Utah and Colorado sections alone. I can't find a way to tell what area has what unless you go through each one separately (please tell me if I am missing something?). Could it help the site from having to go off line such as last night to clean things up? I can only imagine how many thousands of problems are taking up space. Would a Bouldering site get more traffic than the Bike site? Seems to me it would but I guess that would be a whole lot more work. Any thoughts, Admin guys?
'Show all route types' box.

Sort by section has a list of trad/sport/boulder/ice/alpine/snow, it will highlight the number of routes in a specific area that fall into the category you select.

Example (from nh obviously)

-with nothing selected to sort by: Rumney (953 Routes)
- selected bouldering route types: Rumney (178/953)

so you can see what areas have what without clicking into them and looking at the beautiful pie charts.

Exactly... Yeah, I'd expect it to be a lot of work. Might be a fun machine learning experiment to aggregate the various route comments into a "computed" range of suggestions that could be converted to the user's rack, but I wouldn't expect it to be a quick & easy project (or even particularly accurate).

1. Parse main route pro recommendation.
2. Parse comments to look for pro recommendations.
3. Aggregate the suggestions and convert suggestions to their physical sizes.
4. Convert suggested sizes to user's actual rack.

Maybe throw in some weighting that looks for suggestions from climbers who have similar styles / skills based on their ticklists & their gear suggestions for other routes.

Since this depends on:
"...MP users input their rack into their profile..."
...which is the largest reason why this whole idea is basically unworkable and not worth the coding effort. MP users right now don't bother to fill out let alone update their profile.
This will appeal only to the most anal retentive and those that fondle their gear every evening.

There's nothing like smoking a bowl and fondling your climbing gear every evening. But I never update my MP profile. Fuck that.

At least give the guy a few hits on the pipe, if your going to fondle his junk.

Not quite. The output could list several gear lists in the different cam / stopper makes & models which users could then compare to their rack. One step closer than manually applying a gear sizing chart to convert 'Gear to 3"' or 'Gear to a #4 Camalot'.

"worth the coding effort" is subjective. It might be worth it to someone who likes to code and wants an experiment... ;-). But I'm definitely not suggesting that it would be a widely-used feature.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
