Weather to Ice Conditions Question

Hey guys,

Thought I might try to tap into the MP brain a bit. I had a question about how different weather conditions will affect the quality and formation of ice.

Does anyone know or could link to some info about what some generalized temperatures, sun exposures, and humidity levels are to start sublimating out ice, when you get new ice formations, where ice starts to get more brittle vs plastic, how long it takes ice that is in stasis to start to get rotten, etc.? I have a sense of what these conditions are but I have never seen any hard numbers or even general ranges.

Thanks,
Zach

Not extremely detailed, but may assist some.

I doubt you're going to find "hard numbers"; there's too many variables involved.

Basically: Cold = brittle. Large temp drop = stress. Flash freeze = tinsel. Temp around or above freezing = plastic. Old = more likely to be grainy. Sun and warm = rot. Refrozen rot = super grainy and sketchy. Yellow = huskies. High elevation + sun + dry air = sublimation.

Ok, it's a Master's Thesis on the formation and collapse of ice structures near or onto roads in Gaspesie affecting the road networks. The transport department had gathered meteorological data as well as measurements etc which was used as the statistical foundations for the paper.
Added even more data, observing the ice flow using markers etc.

Hey guys,

Looks like just what I'm looking for, luc! Too bad its in french...

That Petzl webpage is definitely along the lines of what I was thinking.

Thanks for the responses!
