Dog incident at Gunks 12/12

Well since I live in Gardiner and go to the Mohonk preserve all the time. I can attest to the dogs and the biting incident is unfortunate, and not very common. That being said I've ran into loose dogs while climbers climb. Most are playful, some are vicious. As a former Army man, I protect myself and my family I will also protect those afraid to protect themselves. We are not supposed to carry firearms on the preserve. However a good paor of combat boots and a knife work wonders.

I was actually a part of the party of three with the dog, I was hitchhiking a climbing partner that morning and nabbed two middle aged gentleman that were very knowledgeable and friendly.

The dog is a rescue and has bitten two or three climbers from what I heard. We were at the base of mf and the party that was bitten was in a group of eight, mostly foreigners. The dog was tied up although in a bad spot but the guy walked over to it and was nipped. Did break the skin but not too serious. His yell was a little comical to me, very cartoony

The man that was bitten handled it very well but his party were quite douchey, even though I didn't know the guy I was climbing with I have a strong personality and argued with the victims friends about why walk next to a chained dog... But I'm always looking for confrontation and love to get my ass kicked and even more when it's a good fight.

The owner of the dog is a very nice guy but has a surgery and won't be back until late spring (i think that's what the date was)

But it did make me look bad being with them even though I was a stranger

Edit.. I have the perfect crag dog. Olga she's an eight pound shih Tzu, lays on the pack and hardly wanders, can stand on my head and fits in the pack when multi pitch requires it looking adorable with her head sticking out and poops little tootsie rolls that are easily picked up (or if my girls not there to do that, thrown into the distance by me)

You argued with them about why they walked on the climbers trail? and didn't walk into the woods to avoid a piece of shit dog that has already bitten three people.. wow you're more of an asshole than the dogs owner.. Whose a huge asshole for bringing a dog that has bitten people and leaving it UNATTENDED in the middle of a trail. His self entitlement is legendary and if that dog every bit me I'd kick it in the face and be calling a lawyer.

While I'm the first to say that there are too many lawyers (and frivolous lawsuits) in the US, I have to agree with the last part of the above. A repeat biter is a known hazard, and the owner is just asking for a 6 figure lawsuit next time the mutt bites someone. Sadly, this seems to be what it takes to get through to some BDO (bad dog owners).

I beg to differ on this statement. You can be the nicest guy in the world, but if you take a loaded weapon to a common area, leave it laying around in plain sight, and watch as someone shoots themselves with it, I wouldnt consider you to be a nice person! Especially if you have a history of taking said loaded weapon with you and this routinely happens!

This is exactly what this guy is doing by continuing to take the dog to the crag. There is simply no excuse for this. So your climbing lifestyle is going to be impacted by Kujo because you cant take him to the crag? Tough sh1t! Its called being a responsible adult. "Oh, but Kujo isn't always like this!" If it happens once, its on the owner to remove the possibility of it happening again. I know tons of great crag dogs and its unfortunate because it only takes one incident to ruin it for everyone.

Leave Kujo at home! Stop making your problem everyone elses problem!

Seems like every time I have been bit it happens when simply standing there letting the dog come up and say hi. the biters are sneeky and just come right up on you and bite without warning when you think they are just going to sniff.

Get rid of the dogs and bring back the fucking wolfs! Wolves, mountain lions, and great big brown bears that eat fat 5.7 climbers who take too long getting off the ground for breakfast. I would bet the aggressive pits leashed around the belay would become super popular if we did.

The real problem is, there are no real problems, just persons who were told they were special and they should get what they want. It's just too bad we can't all get what we want.

In colloquial terms, this is called entitlement, and it's an epidemic that reaches far beyond the climbing culture. But we can save that for another thread...

The dog gets a first place trophy for getting after it and Chance gets a participation trophy for thinking about getting after it on an online forum.

Entilement to not get harassed or bit by someone elses dog or is it entitlement to think you can bring your dog anywheres you want regardless of its behavior......

great idea but a bunch of stuff was left out. He should have stuffed his face in several peoples crotches and dropped a huge steamer in front of everyone.
