Yes, please do, in fact down here in 'merica you can shoot them in the face or blow them up as well. All three if you enjoy a good hat trick.

Realistically, probably not. The owner might deserve it but you'd probably be arrested or beaten up....

My point, really, is not to hurt a dumb dog for acting like a dog. It's the owner's responsibility to control their animal or just leave them at home if they are aggressive.

cragman2 wrote: It would be a real shame if a dog gets put down because of a bad owner. Should put the owner down and send the dog to someone who can train it and be responsible. I have 2 dogs. One is fine around people, the other somewhat unpredictable. I am aware of this and do not put bthe dog in situations where he might be an annoyance or, worse, bite someone. He has been trained but I still just don't take him climbing or leave him unattended.
This is such a nice surprise to hear for a change. I've met a lot of good dogs that I enjoy, plenty of annoying but not really dangerous dogs, and a few dangerous or problematic dogs. Not one of the owners of the dogs in that last group would ever admit that their dog had a problem. Total blinders.

Kudos to you for being real, and making appropriate choices. Some dogs will just always have problems, and they need love too. What they don't need is owners that live in a fantasy world where their dog is perfect, or their owners think that everyone else in the world needs to cater to their dogs issues.

I think there is a misconception that people with aggresive dogs are wanna be tough guys. certainly some are but more often they are super nice people who love their dog so much that they are completly clueless that their dog has issues. When the dog does something wrong it gets scolded in baby talk and probobly does not even know it's being scolded.

Agreed Nick..

Most dogs who misbehave or don't listen come from people who shouldn't own a dog. They either don't have what it takes to train a dog or don't have the time.

I hate your dog

Most people choose to ignore this law, apparently. Some dude's dog kept poking into my bag, and then stepped on my rope while I was belaying my partner. I was so pissed and told him to keep it away from my stuffs.

Around here, most places that put those up do zero to enforce it. It's kind of a joke.

frank minunni wrote:Sorry dog lovers but as far as I'm concerned, keep all dogs away from the cliffs. I would love it if Mohonk banned them. Your dogs aren't nearly as cute and wonderful as you think they are. I've almost been bitten a couple of times and I have no problem with a foot to the face. For you responsible dog owners, sorry but since there's no way to weed out the good from the bad, they should all be banned. Nothing worse than some dog rummaging through my pack or taking a god awful smelling shit at the base.

My boyfriend has been bit at the Gunks as well (years ago), another friend got bit at ORG and gave his Dr. bill to the dog owner. Today my food was eaten by a pup but not too big of a deal being it was a friend's dog. Twice, my friend had his belongings pissed on at the Gallery in Red Rock by dogs. And a few weeks ago, we had to deal with a man (who put a large, loud, cowbell on his dog) screaming incessantly, "RANGER! BAD DOG! COME HERE! RANGER" so many times that I had these words repeated like a bad song chorus in my head for hours. His dog rummaged through our belongings and someone in my party told him to take control of his dog. I've had dogs running around pulling on lead lines as the rope accidentally catches to them as they run by chasing each other. The stories go on. I agree with poster Nick that no one loves your dog the way you do (and rightfully so..).

Sometimes I just come to expect these nightmare dog scenes when I choose to go to sport crags (presently in Red Rock and the sierra eastside) so I mentally prepare for it and deal. If I know I can't or don't want to deal, I go far back in the canyons or the backcountry.

I hope the people that got bit are okay - and hope those types of rogue dog owners will take more responsibility.

Dogs are on this earth to love and comfort humans. Use them for this. Enjoy them and don't worry about bullshit like your lunch and your perfectly perfect day outside climbing. Be open to the joy that dogs bring to this stressful, tired world.

I ran into the same guy a few weeks ago at Dante's wall. It really does get on your nerves after a while.

As for enjoying dogs, who were put here to..."love and comfort humans.": I sure hope that's tongue in cheek. If not, stay home with your little bundle of love so you can give it all the attention it surely deserves

He's right though. Except they weren't put here. Man created dog for companionship. I would put this accomplishment up there with creating written language. It's quite the amazing feat and has helped man survive more than any other invention we have ever created. It's only in the last 50-100 years where the dog hasn't played an essential role in man's life.
I don't even have a dog.

I have had many dogs over the years and they have all been my best buddies, to varying degrees. However, I don't expect anyone else to feel the same about them and I am aware that my dogs can be a pain in the butt, so I do not let them run loose in public places or take them with me anywhere I can't be aware of and control their behaviour.
I have had dogs whose only fault is being overly friendly but I realize that not everyone appreciates a big slobbery dog jumping on them or leaning into them and wanting attention. I don't allow this if it isn't welcome.
My worst dog was an Akita that was very aggressive and dangerous to anyone that was unfamiliar. I knew this and kept him away from situations where he could have inflicted serious injury (and gotten us both in serious trouble).
I have also had dogs that were mellow and didn't bother anyone but all dogs are unpredictable and other people deserve to not be bothered by them if they so choose.

Me and my girlfriend had a similar incident with the same dog twice! I was walking down the trail the owner and two friends were up on a second or third pithc and the dog was tied to a fallen tree right in the middle of the trail.. The looked very uneasy so we slowly approached.. spoke to it very softly.. Since both of us love dogs we figured it was just nervous and would be ok.. as we got closer it lunged at us and started tiring to pull free and bite us..

This dog was left Alone in the middle of the trail where other people have to walk.. Never confronted the owner though I wish I did. What a piece of shit.. he had his dog in oe of those tight shirts that are supposed to help them with anxiety so clearly he knew his dog had issues.

The second time the guy was standing near his dog and as I approached he grabbed the collar right before the dog began barking and snapping at me. He very clearly is away he has an aggressive dog and yet he leaves it in the direct way of other people un supervised.. IF anyone knows the person I'm talking about I hope someone can tell him he is a selfish piece of shit

If all dog owners just left their dogs at home when they are doing something that makes it so they can't be 100% responsible for them at all times, the world would be a much better place.

There are a very very few dogs that are excelent crag dogs. Baily comes to mind as a good crag dog. . chances are pretty darn good though that yours is not one of them. I know one of my favorite dogs, Bella bit someone at rumny, ran away at the gunks wandering arround in the road and chased the campground managers cat in seneca. All on the same trip.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
