Dog incident at Gunks 12/12

Rob, I thought I had an original idea. You're killing me man!

FWIW, I think it's an awfully boring day for a dog at a crag. I either go climbing OR I go for a walk with my dog.

Be a responsible part of the community by leaving your dogs, kids, and gym friends at home (or in the car if not too hot) while you climb. Thanks in advance!

It's not the breed it's the owner! Stop taking untrained dogs to the crag. Maybe they should stay home and train there dog. Put down the owner not the dog.

My dog just sits around if he's home. Not fun. At least he gets plenty of laps and love from the climbers that do love dogs, which is easily greater than 50% (present company not included).

I'm more worried about my dog getting injured (or killed) by rock fall than him doing anything. Generally he just sits on my pack ("bed") and waits for us to finish. The occasional attention (which he loves) from passersby IMO is worth the very small risk of him getting injured. The risk is further reduced by his tiny size.

It's definitely something I've given a lot of thought to. There are some trips he doesn't come along, but the Gunks are definitely a tag along day.

I realize some people just don't like dogs, kids, whatever may infringe even the slightest on their climbing day. I feel like that about many of the other climbers. ;-)

Back to topic - this was about bad dogs, not the majority of well behaved dogs.

Cruel is bit of a generalization and overstatement. I leave my pup leashed to a tree with water when im doing no more than 3 pitches. He is usually asleep or getting petted when i get back down. Any longer and he posts up in the truck if im at a crowded spot or if im in the middle of nowhere he just chills unleashed. I always find him sleeping on the empty rope bag when i get down. He is a 10 year old lab and is the calmest nicest soul i have ever encountered. Not all dogs are calm and friendly. Its a case by case basis and any generalization is nonsense, In my opinion

leaving a dog on the ground unattended while multi-pitching is poor manners. Pure and simple.

You can argue about cragging, but multipitch - it's just irresponsible and inconsiderate.

Dogs don't belong where there's other people. During the week when you're not going to run into a bunch of strangers might be cool. I know your dogs cool but not every dog is. Same with goat tees.

Babies? Hey, whatever gets mom and dad outside.

Gym friends? Hell no! They climb harder than you plus they've caught like 1000 more falls than you.

Sorry dog lovers but as far as I'm concerned, keep all dogs away from the cliffs. I would love it if Mohonk banned them. Your dogs aren't nearly as cute and wonderful as you think they are. I've almost been bitten a couple of times and I have no problem with a foot to the face.
For you responsible dog owners, sorry but since there's no way to weed out the good from the bad, they should all be banned. Nothing worse than some dog rummaging through my pack or taking a god awful smelling shit at the base.

Wow, crazy that this is a problem. Seems like everyone here has pups. There are always dogs at the crags. It's interesting that so many people from other places are so outspoken about it. I've never experienced anyone upset about it at our local crags.

If a dog bites you in public, you are within your legal right to put the dog down yourself. A large rock will usually do the trick.

I don't know you, but most of the dog owners here in Colorado seem oblivious that anyone else even exists. Most of them probably wouldn't even notice if someone else was upset about it, unless you smacked them in the face.

The dog gets tied up to s tree adjacent to the approach trail.

Again, substitute crag baby for dog and you're spot on. At least most dogs are cute!

Substitute "Muslim" and you have President Trump - who I assume all the dog haters will vote for.

The dog was tied up near the base of Something Interesting, and I guess the guy that got bit had left his shoes near the dog. I was leading Three Pines when the whole thing unfolded, but I was able to watch the shenanigans from my stance.

Might work with a Shih Tzu or something but some dogs are bad ass...

This is a pointless conversation. People will keep bringing dogs to crags and will keep doing every other disrespectful/inconsiderate thing imaginable. The world would be a boring place if everyone agreed on everything.

Owners of dogs and babies are never objective about their precious little ones. Never met an owner that acknowledged that their dog is a piece of shit, regardless of the animals behavior. I admit I hate other people's dogs, especially at the crag.

So you're saying doing disrespectful/inconsiderate things makes the world more interesting?
