Crampon suggestions

I am looking to start ice climbing in the midwest. WI, MN, MI I have Salewa Pro boots. With the extra 20 percent discount at back country I am looking to pick up crampons. What would be a good starting point for a beginner? From what I have read Grivels are good and the G14 in particular.

I've only been playing the ice game for two years but it seems like for vertical/waterfall ice a crampon with dual front points that can be converted to monopoints like the G14's, Petzl Lynx, or BD cyborg's is the way to go.

I have new in box stingers for sale if your at all interested. I would beat the online price.

If you're just looking at what's on sale online, I would seriously look at the petzl lynx. Great crampon that can pretty much do anything.

That said, IMO the best crampons on the market are the CAMP blade runners. You may be able to find them on sale at another site, but even if you can't the versatility of the system, in addition to their climbability put them way ahead of the game.

If you have time you should head up to the Michigan Ice Fest and demo as much as you can. Awesome time with good people too.

Hey if you're climbing waterfall ice(mostly what you find here in the Midwest) you will want any crampon that has a vertical front point like the BD cyborg for example. All of the vertical blade crampons perform about the same but make sure you read to see what fits your boot best and if your boot can take a toe bail. This will give it a better grasp to your boot when you're swinging the points into ice. Have fun and good luck out there!
