NC Ice (apart from Whitsides)?

New to trying to get on ice in the area, but where else in NC can one find a chance at getting on ice (lead, TR, doesn't matter), apart from Whitesides? Whitesides definitely looks great, but just hoping to know what else is out there.

And, you know, if conditions are in, always looking for an ice partner!

Pick up Crowders book, it's a start. It's not totally accurate and you should expect to hunt and poke around. You can find his contact info on coolclimbing.com as I'm not sure if it's still in print. Fox mtn guides usually has a FB page with conditions but they tend to only post stuff from their guides and not allow external conditions reports

Don't forget the Saphire Valley. Good stuff if it's in.

Celo Knob is great. Also, conditions dependent,Toxaway, Big Lost Cove, Table Rock Devils Cellar area, Choss Mountain, Cedar Rock north side, John's Rock, Linville Gorge amphitheater, Sam's Knob. That should keep your Google fingers busy.

"Southern Fried Ice" is the name of the guidebook by Michael Crowder. I know there are still copies available at Fox Mountain Guides, but you'd probably want to contact them in advance to buy it since the shop is rarely staffed during the day as the guides are all out guiding. Maybe they'd mail it to you...?

Info is a bit hard to find, which is why I built that topo for Whiteside. I had plans to create some more, but moved before that came to fruition. As stated above, the SE ice conditions page on Facebook can be a good spot to find beta and partners. I believe anyone can post, but it doesn't show up directly in the feed; you have to dig around for it.

Happy hunting!

Awesome info all around, thanks everyone! Now hopefully I'll be around and the ice will be in to climb this winter.

Probably shouldn't post toxaway.....its all rich private homes. At best you'll get run off or cited for treaspass, possibly get your car towed.
Cullasaja Gorge has some cool stuff but be prepared to set a tyrolian over a class 3-4 rapid in winter. There are some stories about that...
Big Lost Cove is a bit of a drive for me and I've never been there, if someone wouldn't mind messaging me w info id appreciate it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
